When to purge old clothes

Recommended Posts

I am so excited that I can fit my size 24 clothes that I began the process of purging my old size 26/28s. How often should this be done and what to do with the old clothes. I feel happy about the victory however I do not think I can do this every weekend. What is a good rule to follow.

I did it as I tried things on. I kept an empty tote in the bedroom and as I tried things on and found them too big, they went in the tote. Once it was full I bagged them up and put them aside to donate. Mine all went to Savers. They support the Epilepsy Foundation, and I do most of my shopping there. Plus you can get a tax write-off for your donations if you ask. I kept clothes as long as possible, especially pants. I had very saggy rear ends before I finally purged all of them. It gets expensive to replace everything constantly.

Congrats on the smaller size!

I'm only three weeks post-op so haven't had the pleasure of baggy clothes yet but I am planning to take the clothes I can't wear anymore to my local support group meetings. Many of them offer a clothing swap. You might look into that as an option. No tax write-off but you might score some "new" clothes for your new body.

I got rid of almost everything presurgery which was a mistake but I wanted to purge. Now I've just been tossing stuff into a pile as it gets too big for me. That pile was huge I've split it up now into things I can consign, things to give to a friend who is in the process of having surgery, and things to donate.

I went through and purged all the off-season stuff -- there are no more big winter clothes in my closet (except coats which will have to go too I just can't bring myself to do it yet). Now, as stuff is getting baggy or if they're big tops that used to cover my big tummy, I just put it in a garbage bag to donate.

Some stuff I'm actually sad to see go -- like the big sized bike shorts that have a baggy overshort. Those things were expensive and my favorite and now they are practically falling off. I also have a pair of huge sized winter bike riding tights -- again expensive but too baggy. I have a big swimsuit I was more than happy to toss especially after going to the store this weekend and fitting into a smaller size. I'm going on vacation in 3 weeks (to Belize -- woot!) and had to have new swimsuits but waited until as late as possible to buy new ones so they would fit nicely.

All my stuff goes to the Salvation Army. I don't have any friends that size -- they are all a lot bigger or a lot smaller.

There are two apps for your phone that I use religiously! The most common one is Poshmark and the trading app is Vinted. This is especially good if you buy expensive clothes like Torrid, things from Macy's etc. (which I do) I buy, sell, and trade on both of those. They also have desktop versions if you wanted to look at what they have before downloading. The bottom line is, if you have nice stuff you can make a lot of money and buy new clothes there! Also, on Vinted..people swap clothes in different sizes all the time. I'm Beckyyb93 on there too if you guys want to check out my "closet". Good luck!

Yeah, just like Beckyy I am selling my stuff. I have really nice and expensive things and if they are in good condition (most of them are), I am selling them. The ones I would not wear coz they show signs of wear I just toss them in the rubbish. I would not want anybody to have them if I do not think it's worthy.

As of now I am shopping smaller sizes then I am now (I am about size 16 jeans and 14 tops). I am buying 10, 12 sizes and first time in my life I know for sure they will fit in metter of months.

It is crazy how fast I drop sizes, I barely get any fun out of my clothings. But I am a shopper, what can ya' do? ;)

I purged as I transitioned from winter to summer this year clothing and donated the majority of my clothes to either Goodwill or the Salvation Army. The more expensive stuff I sent to a consignment store. I continue to lose, so I purge every time I try on clothes, if they don't fit, I put them in a pile for Goodwill or consignment. Everything else is thrown away.

Yeah, I literately have thousands of dollars worth of plus sized designer clothes and am very much looking forward to selling them. Most of it is Torrid and I get between $20-$35 an item which adds up fast when you have a whole bedroom converted into a closet..I'm a serious shopaholic! I can't wait to buy smaller sizes :)

I've never been "into" clothes, so my closet is a little bare. I'm not at the purging stage yet, but afraid that when I am, I'm going to be running around naked. I think a visit to savers is in my near future. Maybe clothes shopping will be fun once I've lost several sizes.

Yup, same here, I made a post somewhere earlier that I am actually sad to see a few of my stuff to go. It took me long time, effort and money to build me wardrobe and now I have to say goodbyes. I mean it is great to lose weight but it will cost me a lot 'til I reach my goal weight :D Somebody suggested to have my clothings altered, I guess I will look into that, maybe a few of them can be altered without looking funny, but most of them has to be sold...

Yeah, I'm not sure how well that would work out..also half the fun of losing weight is buying smaller new clothes :P even though I will miss some of my old favorites..I have some small favorites too though from before I gained weight that I have kept so am looking forward to being able to fit those!

Usually my friends will say, "Hey Amanda, those shorts are way too big on you!" Then I let them go. I'm still in that mindset of being 320, that I don't know when to let go. So now I have two big black garbage bags full of clothes I can't wear and the pile is growing. Went from a 26 to a 16/18. Say goodbye to those clothes forever!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
