bypass verses sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I still have 3 months to go, and I have my visit with surgeon on 8/19. I feel like I have read everything over and over on which surgery to have. Im leaning towards the bypass, but I keep going back an forth to the sleeve.. how do you know which one to do??

Be sure to discuss with your surgeon because he/she knows your situation best. My surgeon said I would probably be happy with either procedure but since I'm diabetic he recommended the bypass. As he put it, bypass carries more risk but also more reward.

There are tons of posts all over here with pros and cons, I'd suggest you do some reading around!

You also have to think about your individual symptoms pre-op like if you have GERD you would be better off with a bypass because it eliminates acid/hearburn.

The main difference (very short version) is the sleeve is just restrictive, you can still eat what you want in smaller portions later which can be both a blessing and a curse. The bypass is restrictive and malabsorptive which will help you lose more weight but can also cause dumping syndrome if you eat sugar/carbs and you need to seriously stick to your Vitamin regimen for the rest of your life since you aren't getting it from food. With the bypass there will likely be foods you won't ever be able to tolerate like the sweets which again is good and bad, you won't be tempted to cheat but you won't ever be allowed a bite here or there if you have severe dumping which can upset people.

Good luck! If you have any questions feel free to ask. Also, I had a sleeve and am revising to a bypass in a few days because of the severe acid.

That's what my surgeon said too April; the mal-absorption part of the bypass will help very much with metabolic issues like diabetes. still a bit scary though.

I was in the situation. I felt all along the sleeve is the way I wanted to go. But after talking with my doctor, I chose gastric bypass for a few different reasons. I was diagnosed with Barretts, which was caused by gerd. .Also I do not have the disipline to control what I eat. As of today I am down 19 pounds in 2 weeks. The surgery itself went very smooth and with little discomfort. I am in the 60+generation and I felt it would be hard to break all these bad habits I had for years. So far the gastric surgery is making it much easier. .But it all depends on your health and what your doctor feels is right for you. Either way, I wish you the best of luck

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
