Hello all, I am new to this app, I am 3 months into my 3 months nutritional visits before getting my surgery and I just found out I am 4 1/2 months pregnant, my period was very irregular I didn't have it since November of 2013 so that's why I didn't think I'll be pregnant. Now I have to put my surgery on hold. I'm just curious, will I have to start over again? I'm from New York City and I was going to do my surgery in montefiore hospital in the bronx. I am kind of happy I'm pregnant and the surgery will always be there for me to do but I really wanted this and get healthy. Thanks for everyone's support :(

First, I would see if your hospital has a bariatric coordinator and ask if it could be scheduled after you have the baby. If not, call your insurance company. If you are going with insurance, do they require a "Center of Excellence" hospital?

Best wishes for your family and the bambino!

Congratulations on getting pregnant! I don't know the answer, but wanted to give you a hug and to tell you that everything works itself out in time. If you want the surgery down the road, it will happen...even if you have to qualify all over again.

I had my surgery when my son was 4 months old. I was worried that insurance or my surgeon would deny me because it was so soon, but they didn't. I would recommend lots of help though if you decide to pursue this soon after your baby is born. It's been tough but do-able and so worth it! I was lucky though- my son is little so the lifting isn't bad and I healed pretty quick from surgery. Good luck to you and congratulations!!

I think the visits have to be within 12 months.

Congrats and I think that you should def get with your surgery center and come up with a plan for after the birth. That way everything is all mapped out for you and you can pick back up with it as soon as possible after the baby comes.

Edit: I noticed that you are near the end of your diet visits. Maybe what you can do is finish out your required visits so that you can go for approval. As an example: I finished my visits/requirements in February and was just approved for the second time (moved to a new city). So for me it's been 5 months already since I was in the supervised diet stage and my approval is good for surgery through October.

:)

I just want to thank you all for taking the time and replying back to me :) I do have my last appointment on July 25th , I'm going to still go and let them know what's going on. Hopefully they tell me I can do it after the baby is born :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
