Advil or Aleve every again?

Recommended Posts

I was told not to use Advil or Aleve but Tylenol. However, Tylenol does nothing for me. I normally use Advil for my headaches and I have a really bad headache now. Just wondering if anyone was told thus initially but are able to use now? I am just about 2 weeks out...11days to be exact. Anything else I can take for my headache?

I was told today that with the sleeve they are all ok to take. Bypass patients have to be more careful because of the malabsorption issue. Ibuprofen can cause bleeding, but only if you are taking it on a daily basis.

Best answer is to call your surgeon.

I was told to take Tylenol for pain if I needed anything during the 1st month post-op because other pain revilers can be a stomach irritant. But after that 1st month, I was cleared to eat full foods and could take any pain reliever I wanted. Since then, I've taken whatever was convenient - aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen with no problems. Sometimes, if I don't eat first, I get a little heartburn, but nothing that lasts.

My surgical team said to not use Alieve/Advil, etc. for 1 month post op. However, I can take Tylenol. Clearly your medical issues were discussed prior. The best advice is to call the number given to you, should you have questions. Normally there are nurses available to answer questions 24/7.

Good luck!

I was told by my surgeon to never use NSAIDs of any kind because of the potential to erode your stomach lining. Never, as in, do not use for the rest of my life. They even gave me a list with the names of all the meds I'm supposed to stay away from. I mostly used Aleve and Advil for pain, but have switched to Tylenol. Tylenol works ok for me for some things, but definitely not for others. I'm more than likely going to have to get a prescription Migraine medicine to deal with my headaches.

As with pretty much anything though, different surgeons recommend different things. Although it won't help your with your headache right now, you should definitely bring the subject up with your surgeon to get his opinion on the matter.

My question would be.."did you have a sleeve or complete bypass?" Bypass you CANNOT use Alieve/Motrin (NSAIDS). Did you check in with your doctor??

My surgeon cleared me for ibuprofen at 6 weeks post op. It's one of the reasons I chose a sleeve over bypass. He said because of the anastomosis (joining of the stomach to small intestine) with the bypass, those patients are prone to ulcers, so never any NSAIDS. With the sleeve, once the suture line is healed, he said there is less risk. I take ibuprofen every day, and have since 6 weeks post op - so far, so good. Guess it depends on you and your docs advice.

@@4everbeautiful I had a sleeve. The only thing that was told to me was to stop using them pre-op and to use Tylenol post op for pain.

I had sleeve. My surgeon said never take Motrin, Ibuprofen, etc. only can take Tylenol. For me, never means never. But your surgeon should be your final resource on how you move forward with this type of pain reliever.

I was told never again. I too had little to no effect with Tylenol and used only Advil liqui gels but now I use the extra strength Tylenol rapid release and they work just as well as the Advil. I would call your surgeon.

As stated in my previous posts, I would contact the doctors office to get the medical answer you need. If they responded "Tylenol only" during post - op, then that is your FINAL answer and better route to go. Follow doctors' orders!!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
