Less complications with RNY than with the band???

Recommended Posts

I'm due to have my surgery in 3 weeks (pending insurance approval)... I've been feverishy researching every morsel of information I can find on the band.... I came across this video of a girl who had the lap band, and was unsuccessful. She is at the doctor's office on the day of her gastric bypass, and has some pretty negative things to say about the band. I am curious about what you guys who've ALREADY been banded, think about what she has to say. ......

My surgeon says that her surgeon is so badly recognized that the surgeons in the US won't even consider him a surgeon and that he is considered an outcast for this very reason.

Honestly, you can't go by what that doc says. I started to watch the video until I saw who the doc was and then I didn't waste my time.

That doc is selling his new MGB procedure and he will down anything unless it is what he is selling.

I'll bet you a dollar that was a pre-planned script and I'll further bet you that the girl was either paid or given a deal on her MGB for doing the clip.

Hopefully that doc is verrrry old and he'll retire and go away soon. He doesn't do the weight loss community any favors with his nonsense.

I watched a little of that. I haven't had my surgery yet, but it seems to me like that girl didn't have any interest whatsoever in having her band work. I'm sure her gastric by pass will fail for her, too. Seems like the doctor making the video wants to promote his proceedure.

I wonder why that girl was eating chips and ice cream. Those are 2 things that made me fat to begin with. The lap band is just a tool to help you change to a healthier eating style, not a solution in itself. I believe she was working against her band instead of with it. It really would be interesting to see a eating log of hers.

I have NOT been banded, but my thoughts are RNY fails too... that's why some docs are doing bands on POST RNY patients!

I have not been banded but I watched this same video. Listen to what she says 'I couldn't hold anything down. The only thing I could eat was chips and stuff like that.' I guess I tend to believe that she really didn't work with her band. She was still eating chips and cake and etc. This is just MY opinion but after watching it a couple different times I think she failed that band instead of the band failing her. I am not sure. I did find though as I kept looking at different videos that there are several other people on there from thes same person ( DrRRutledge) and all of them are saying negative things towards the band and positive about the by-pass. A couple different sites that I have found talks about if you are finding one doctor or clinic saying negative just about the band or just about the by-pass their motives need to be speculated.

Just my two cents worth.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
