I've gained 46 pounds in 12 days!

Recommended Posts

So I've been sick since July 4th. I went to the hospital July 7th and got fluids for being dehydrated. Then on the 9th I went to my lap band doctor to get adjusted and talked to my doctor because I had thought I was bulimic but according to her it was all because my band was to tight. So Thursday I noticed I started swelling all over and thought that I was having an allergic reaction to something. By Sunday I was feeling a little better and the swelling had gone down. When I got to work Monday morning I weighed myself and had put on 25 pounds. I started swelling again Monday night. I went back to the doctor on Thursday (6/17) and had put on a total of 40 pounds in 8 days. The doctor said she was not sure what was going on that no one could put on that much weight in that amount of days she was going to call my lap band doctor and talk to her that she would give me a call when she found something out. Later that day the swelling got bad so I went to the hospital they admitted me for low potassium and ran all kinds of test trying to figure out what was wrong. The doctors don't know why I am swelling and most of the doctors did not believe I gained that much weight even though I had proof from my last 2 doctor appointments. Plus I was gaining weight while in the hospital. So now here it is 12 days since my last adjustment and I've put on a total of 46 pounds in 12 days! I've called my lap band doctor and they said they will call me back. I'm not sure what else to do but I'm freaking out!!! Has anyone else had any problems like this or heard of anything happening to make someone put on this kind of weight...the doctors I've seen say I can't hold that much Water weight and it cant be weight from over eating that it has to be the lap band.

Good grief, no wonder your stressed out. I can understand.

It is going to take a little time for them to figure it out. Try to not get to beside yourself since it isn't like you ate it onto yourself. Something must be really off.

Hopefully it will go away as fast as it came. I can't help you but know we are all here to support you.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Colleen

I'm scared to death as fast as I'm putting this weight on. I just want to cry I've worked hard and months to get where I was at and in just days I'm putting it back on.

It does not sound like permanent weight. I bet when they figure out and correct what is causing it that it will go right back down.

I don't understand why they say "it has to be the lap band." Are you tracking calorie and Protein intake? Are you eating a sensible diet? Have you been on medication for Fluid retention in the past??? A lot of things just don't add up. It takes a LOT of calories to add a pound of fat.... but Fluid retention would be my first guess. Something just doesn't add up. I'd be demanding some real answers from the doctors, besides trying to blame the band... EXACTLY why they think the band is the cause would be my first question, with some sustainable science, to make the case.

The weekend after I got adjusted I didn't eat like I normally would but I didn't go crazy by no means. I figured just from being able to eat and drink again I would put on a little weight but 46 pounds is just crazy. I've never had any of these problems before. If I dont hear back from my lap band doctor today I'm going to go back to the hospital that I went to the first time when I was 46 pounds lighter.

I agree with labwalker. It is just like when you go to the doctor overweight, everything is blamed on being obese no matter what it might be. the band is an area of confusion apparently.

Insist. Heck, I would just show up at the bariatric doctor if they dont call back quick enough.

I agree don't wait for the dr to call you back i would be in their waiting room right now. they will be able to fit you in. most likely it is Water retention but wow that is a lot. do your hands and feet feel different? i have a horrible time with Water retention if i have too much salt my wight can jump by as much as 5lbs in less than 24hrs but it's never permanent and never more than that.

hope you find the answers you need.

Thanks the doctor is in surgery today so they are waiting for her. So I'm about to go to the er at the hospital where she is at.

I think going to the ER is the right thing to do. Water weight is nothing to mess with. I don't see how this can be band related.

So I ended up going to a PCP and they told me that I more then likely malnourished. So that and the rapid weight loss put my body and shock. They still are not clear on what is causing the swelling but once that is figured out they said the weight will come off as quick as I put it on.

Such a relief having someone believe me and give me some type of answer!=)

I'm so sorry you're going through this! I gained an unbelievable amount of weight at one time when I was given Prednisone at the ER for a very bad case of poison ivy. It was, as you say, practically overnight. Put those medical professionals to work -- they need to figure this out!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
