I'm so very lucky and happy to have a wonderful doctor. He very gently brought up WLS, and never pushed it. He waited until I decided that I was ready, and then helped in every way that he could. If anyone in the Pittsburgh area needs a good GP, try Dr. Sam Urick, in the Robinson area.

hello Amanda,

Just wanted to advise you to write a letter, quoting your doctor and the dates he said these things, and mail it to the appropriate person in charge of that doctor. You would be surprised how much difference a letter can make. The things he has said to you, are quite horrific and NO ONE should have to deal with that. We know we are overweight, in fact we are probably our own worse critic. No rude doctor needs to say the awful things he did. And to touch you, knowing your personal beliefs, TERRIBLE. Please write it down. Send it. And learn from it what to say next time (and there may be one) you hear something like that. I have learned from this scenario what I need to say, if it ever happens to me.

I have had wonderful doctors, since I put on weight. I always get female doctors, and have been very very lucky to work with supportive, intelligent, kind and funny (yay) women.

In support,

Triss

P.s. If I were you, I might even send a copy to the show "The Doctors" AND "Dr. Phil" and maybe suggest they can do a special on 'unprofessional and inappropriate doctors". I am quite serious about this.

Boy, this thread is a real eye-opener. We've all heard that some doctors struggle with substance abuse -- which is a toughie, since they have rough jobs and big access to mood-altering drugs. I've got to think some of these A-holes are simply high. Who in hell would say to a patient what shellief's doctor said. He was either insane or high to chance saying that.

I think he was insane. What's truly odd is that he could also be a very though and impeccable doctor. Regardless, I never stepped foot in his office again and neither did my husband.

I find that doctors that have ego or entitlement issues are like that. Basically its I can do anything and get away with it.

I just wanted to add a little of my story here... years ago I had an GYN tell me that I needed to lose weight. I was 275 at the time and I brushed off his suggestion of WLS as ridiculous and very rude. I even changed doctors. Had I only realized that he would be the only doctor who actually addressed my REAL issue, I wouldn't have struggled with heartbreaking infertility and multiple baby losses due to high insulin levels. I am glad I came to the realization that he truly was only trying to help me. I wish I had taken his advice years ago!

Wow. I guess I got all the pages confused and finally see all the comments the doc made to the original poster. WOW. Abusive. Definitely find another doctor if you can. What an asshat.

I can see a suggestion about losing weight being reasonable, but what is more reasonable is an exploration of what a person can do for that. Not just be fobbed off with eat less, pick a diet, and exercise. I mean specific (SMART acronym) type of things.

I wouldn't expect any kind of nagging like, you've gained a lot of weight in the past 6 months, are you eating a lot more and not exercising. I would say there is a weight change of X pounds. I am concerned over this. What do you think would help you to resolve that?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
