Questions...liquids to mushies....help!

Recommended Posts

Today was my first day postop for mushies. I reluctantly decided on a small piece of fish and mashed potatoes. I wasn't even sure I wanted to eat. Now....ouch! I feel like I ate a plate full of rocks. Is this normal? What is a typical mushie meal? Is it the same portion amounts once the band is filled? I have felt great...lost about 15 pounds during the first 2 weeks. The liquids were surprisingly easy. Did I eat too fast? Were my bites too big? Does that matter at this point? Is there restriction even now...because it sure seems that way. Rocks...that's all I can feel. Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice! julie

The only way I could see fish eing a mushy would be a really wet tuna salad. That had been worked up one side and down the other with a fork. Unless you're partial to pureed fish. Ack!

Since the food caused you some discomfort, maybe try thick liquids nd soft mushies for a few days. Cream of X Soups, yogurt, tofu (esp. silken tofu), hummus, pudding, etc. This gives you more to work on than liquids, without having to go straight to mushies. I think I did 4 days of thick liquids before moving to things like mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, etc.

You could have eaten too much, and you could have eaten too fast, and you could have eaten the food without chewing adequately, and... (on and on). Just remember to take it easy. When I hit mushies it was one small baby spoon bite every 5 minutes or so. I wanted to wait that long to make sure everything felt ok.

Did your surgeon provide you with a graduated meal plan - what to eat for how long, and sample foods that fall into the classification?

Thanks...yeah fish is on my mushie list...chicken, too, although I can't imagine eating a grilled chicken breast. I have been doing thick stuff..pudding, cream soup..perhaps I just need a few bites of whatever. It's just a strange, strange thing at first. What a relief though to not be obsessed with food. No rocks for lunch tomorrow.

Julie88. I don't recall fish being on my diet either. You may want to take it easy and stick with the mashed potatoes, but wait another week before you do the fish. Either way, great job on your weight loss and keep up the good work!

If fish and sometimes chicken are on some surgeon's mushy list, then perhaps they need to be blended with broth or mayo or something to actually make then mushy.

When I think mushy, I think of something that I could squish either on the roof of my mouth, or with my fork on a plate down to nothing, Something that if I didn't have teeth, I would be okay to gum and not chew.

Since the OP tried it and it didn't work, then I think that means it's crossed off her mushy list for now. Not every bandster can eat every food (from what I 've read here).

I take threads like these and file them away into my brain for when it's my turn. It very helpful!

Mental note to self, avoid fish for a while after banding, even in soft food stage (not much of a problem-I don't really like it).

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
