Recommended Posts

Hi

Just a question, does any one know

Why are we not allowed to have chewing gum or even diet fizzy drink.

Cause I love my chewing gum and felt they took my hunger away

:))

I'm also in for my first fill in 5 days

Really nervous

I didn't know about not being able to chew gum. My surgeon did tell me that carbonated drinks stretch the part of the stomach/esophagus above the band.

Although some people do gum is same as why not to use straws, because it adds air to the stomach. Gum also suppose to stimulate our appetite.

Fizz, stretch the pouch.

Can you imagine if you swallowed it while being banded? Not sure that would go down too good.

I didn't know we couldn't chew gum? I knew about the straws and sodas... Thanks, I'll have to look that up.

Had small amount of diet coke about 3 months post op. Did not do me any justice. 18 months out and yesterday I did it again with no problem. Chewing gum: If you don't swallow the gum like I do you are ok, but gum can get stuck and require surgery to remove, so be careful with gum. I switch to tic tac and have no issue with them.

I had the problem with chewing gum. When you chew gum it can cause you to get air in your stomach which in turn can cause you to feel bloated and have gas pains. I tried about a week after surgery and this is what happened to me. I hurt for about two hours because I got too much air in my stomach.

I chew gum all the time, I love my chewing gum and I know it might sound strange but it helps me think. It also saves my teeth from chewing on pen caps or biting my nails.

As far as stimulating hunger I don't think it does that for me it actual curbs my hunger, and stimulates that digestive action as well as helps clean your teeth after eating if you can't brush.

It can add extra air into your tummy, drinking from a straw can do that also but I still would rather drink from a straw when out and about then from a cup or glass. When I am home that's not a problem for me :)

I would always caution not to swallow your gum or your straw or anything else that might have a hard time digesting :)

smoothies and Protein Shakes are fine. Especially if you need extra Protein. And yes I put them in a glass.

I always assumed i'd swallow more air drinking smoothies without a straw than with one, since they're thicker than your average drink - if that makes sense?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
