Realistic calories per day?

Recommended Posts

Am 7 months and about 10 days out and have lost 101 lbs. I have 48 more lbs to go to my goal weight of 135 and I'm fine with my loss and speed cause my doc said that it takes 18 months for sleevers to lose all the weight since 2-3 lbs is the avg weekly loss. However, I am scared I am eating too much! I work out constantly (1-3 times a day) and am hungry every two hours! I average about 1200 calories a day although I burn off almost all of it with exercise. I eat Proteins and really healthy although I do love my Quest bars almost daily. Am I over eating and getting back into bad habits? I'm so paranoid!! Need some input because I've even hit 1500 or 1600 calories at least three times since surgery!

Your results have been phenomenal with what you are doing, so I'd keep doing it. The only thing I would caution is that you are also watching volume - don't want to consume too much volume at once.(fear of stretching your sleeve).

I'm guessing your increased hunger is all the calories you are burning. I try to recover after a run with a Protein shake because it fills me up recovers me. It's tough when you are exercising so much because your body has to get the glycogen to burn from somewhere, so you have to feed it. You have to factor in your calorie burn in your daily net.

I too am seven months from surgery. I have steadily increased calories as needed over time as my body needed more due to activity and exercise. Currently I am at 1200 calories in a day and weight loss is still steady. The exercise comment is valid. I do not work out as often as you but absolutely need to eat more on workout days, less on recovery days.

I finds that carbohydrates before a workout helps with the workout, and a Protein Shake after helps me recover faster. As my exercise intensity increased I had to add healthy carbs ( and calories) to have the energy I needed

I don't *know* what's involved in your situation, but I have this thought:

If you're exercising 3 times a day, you are surely still building muscle like crazy. There's that old nutritional adage I remember from forever ago that one pound of fat converts to 7 pounds of muscle. So could that explain your slow weight loss despite your very good control of food intake and calorie "out-go"?

Thanks for all of the responses. I am feeling much better about the fact that I am hungry every few hours and can intake so many calories (or what seems like a lot). I do think the exercise is what is causing it. Thanks all!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
