HAving trouble with cravings Surgery 7/09/14

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on July 09/2014. I have done very well with pain and mibilization. I was up walking after two hours (with help from iv meds of course). And discharged next day. I have not had any issues like vomiting or sever pain. But i find my self very bored with Protien shakes and broth. I have also used the sugar free Water mixers and sugar free popcilces. But im just so down because i feel pretty good so my mind thinks I can eat. So I struggle and struggle hard. any suggestions?

My suggestion is to find a way to spruce up your Protein options. Be it buying samples and having a small tasting party (super fun way to find out what you like and actually get excited about protein..I know AMAZING!) Vitalady does samples of like 40 different Protein powders for $2.99 each with $5 shipping. Other ways to spruce them up is to add PB2 which you can get at any health food store and a lot of grocery stores, they have chocolate Peanut Butter and Peanut Butter flavors. Get sugar free syrups either from Walmart of from torani's webiste or something similar. If your surgeon ok's bananas or other fruits, grind them up in the blender until they are total mush and add them in shakes.

I also have a trick for protein and Fluid intake when you are struggling..I have a timer that buzzes at me every 30 minutes and I have a thermos of a Protein shake I made and a thermos of Water, tea, crystal light, etc. and every time I buzz I take a sip of one then the next buzz the other. One sip for me is roughly an ounce and if you stick to it you'll get your requirements in without even thinking about it. That was way easier for me than looking at a huge Protein Shake and trying to make myself drink it all..daunting!

You'll find ways that work for you, those are just some of my tricks. Good luck!

I agree with the above statements the only thing I will add is when I was struggling I bought a snowcone machine the shave ice mix with the Protein Drink made me feel better, it is very important to get your Protein in because it helps you heal. It takes 6-8 weeks for your incision sights to heal although the outside May look heal the inside is not. Congrats on your choice to be healthy I know how you feel because I hated Soup broth after during the week prior to surgury to shrink my liver but trust me it is so worth it, I'm 8 weeks out and feeling great also remember sugarfree crystal light and sugarfree pop sickles good luck my friend and keep us posted. Welcome to the losers bench.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
