TrailriderJulia 39 Posted July 19, 2014 Why can't we drink them ?? Have you ? Did you die or explode?? :-)
Kindle 8,667 Posted July 19, 2014 The part of our stomach they remove is the fundus. This is the stretchy rubbery part that expands like a balloon to accommodate what we put in there. After surgery, we are left with a tube that really doesn't" give" much. So when you drink carbonated beverages, the bubbles really have no place to go. Go ahead and try to drink something carbonated to see what happens. I did....a couple swallows of beer. And no, I didn't explode (or die) but it sure didn't feel good. I even tried letting sprite sit on ice for 15 minutes and stirred it up to try and defizz it. It wasn't enough. Still too many bubbles. 3 BeagleLover, steph0315 and TrailriderJulia reacted to this
Teachamy 1,042 Posted July 19, 2014 Haa! Yes,I am surprised you didn't read about it. I exploded after I downed a Diet Pepsi! The bubbles are supposed to stretch out the sleeve, make you believe you have room enough to eat more. I haven't touched the stuff since surgery, except for one sip of my husband's seltzer one day. It felt really weird in my tummy--so I've stayed away. I know a few people on this forum who have soda or beer occasionally with no issues. 1 TrailriderJulia reacted to this
joatsaint 2,814 Posted July 19, 2014 I weened myself off carbonated beverages years ago when I discovered Crystal Light. But occasionally I drink a beer or have a diet Sprite. I have to take tiny sips and don't drink carbonated stuff at all if I have recently eaten. Those bubbles will fill you up quick and are no fun if they have no room to expand. I waited until at least 6 months post-op before trying my 1st carbonated drink. 1 ChaoticBliss reacted to this
TrailriderJulia 39 Posted July 19, 2014 I would only on occasion have a regular coke . I miss the cold sweet fiz and thought maybe I could allow myself one as a treat once in a while. Really afraid to try ! Can we really stretch our sleeves out of whack ??
Miss Mac 6,262 Posted July 19, 2014 I think the only thing I miss about soda pop is the sweet flavor. The bubble thing was explained to me as the same reason I should not use a straw or eat quickly. Miss Tummy should not be asked to process bubbles or gulps of air. 1 TrailriderJulia reacted to this
Fluffnomore 1,235 Posted July 19, 2014 I don't think we can stretch our sleeves quite as much as we believe we can. But carbonation is fairly uncomfortable for me too. I've tried a few sips of a diet soda or beer. Not worth it. 1 TrailriderJulia reacted to this
able2cope 193 Posted July 19, 2014 I'm 22 months out and haven't tried anything carbonated, I get all I need from crystal light 1 TrailriderJulia reacted to this
SparkleCat 521 Posted July 19, 2014 I, luckily, was never a soda drinker so I have no desire to have any post-op...However, I did enjoy a beer and have a good friend who owns an amazing brewery, so, of course, I had to see if I could have a glass of his amazing Stout every now and then....Nope! Can't do it...two teeny tiny sips make me miserable. I am actually pretty sad about it All in all, for me, the benefits of the sleeve outweigh the sacrifices...I am happy to avoid bubbles for this healthier me! 2 TrailriderJulia and onlybroomegirl reacted to this
Melodica 64 Posted July 21, 2014 I've been drinking soda occasionally since I was a month out (three months out now). I don't crave it like I used to, so I don't drink it very often though. It doesn't really bother my stomach that much. I just belch a lot after drinking it. I haven't noticed any stretching of my sleeve either. I can eat more now than I could in the beginning of course, but I'm still reduced to maybe five bites (less if I drink something with it - which is a habit I haven't been able to kick yet). I know a lot of people around here (and doctors) will say carbonation is the devil and you should stay far away from it, but the conflicting information makes me believe that there's not as much to it as they want you to think. Ultimately it's up to you whether you want to drink it. I'd just advise going really slowly. Small sips or you'll feel like you're foaming at the mouth! 1 KatieJo4 reacted to this
butterfyeffect 257 Posted July 21, 2014 My doctor said that diet soda is fine in moderation, as long as you don't mind the burping that comes with it. Since everything I eat or drink makes me burp now anyway, I have had a soda a few times since. But I have found that I don't crave it as much as I used to. My go-to drink is now iced tea mixed with Crystal Light lemonade. I drank a whole pitcher of it today. 1 KatieJo4 reacted to this
Josh2xh 70 Posted July 21, 2014 If there was one thing you had to give up, it should be soda. Even sparkling Water is loaded with sodium. 1 TrailriderJulia reacted to this
pammycakes 114 Posted July 21, 2014 I have learned a very hard lesson this weekend.... I am almost 1.5 years out and have never touched a carbonated drinks. I can't believe how uncomfortable I am. No more drinks for me!!!! I will stick with my crystal light
