June 2nd Sleever - almost 7 weeks out... GAS from Protein Drink!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Before surgery, I found a great Protein shake with 30g of Protein. Loved the taste and all was well. Since then, I've done my best to drink 2/day. I always drink 1. I don't care for the taste nearly as much now, but hey... 30 g! Starting this week, whenever I drink 1/2 of 1, I get HORRIBLE Gas pains... like in the floor holding my breath. Gas X helps the pain, for a while, but now the pains come back. This time they were in my new stomach. I could rub under my breast bone and move the air around. I used to drink them from a straw... I know... horrible me (missed that part), but now I've been drinking them slowly from a cup. Anyone else had this issue or any suggestions? Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Just wondering if you are referring to Premier Protein Drink? If so, I know they contain whey carbonate instead of whey isolate. From what I understand whey carbonate is harder to digest and that could be causing the gas problem. Other people have drank this Protein with no issue, but you may not be able to digest them anymore. Also I've heard that even though they contain 30g of protein, you are only getting a portion bc your body cannot break the whey carbonate down to absorb all the protein. I am no expert, this is just info I have gathered in my journey. Good luck, hope you get it figured out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
