My wife prepare her best chicken Soup and as I was eating it may me want to ask the following question:

Once banded, I know that one of the rules are not drinking liquids while you eat, and not drinking anything for about 2 hours after. Does this mean that soup is out of the question or do you only drink the soup and not the vegetables and chicken?

California Dan

Not banded yet, but is comming soon!

Hi Dan...

I haven't been banded that long... but you shouldn't have to give up eating your wifes soup! I am careful not to have Soup that often now that I am past the liquids stage because liquid calories go down easily. You may just want to limit your serving... or... you may just decide to enjoy a nice big bowl of soup once in awhile! I drink Water right up to the minute I eat... don't drink a drop during my meal... and I wait an hour after meals to drink... I was under the impression that this would keep the food in one's pouch longer.

If I just ate soup... they could probably serve it in a punch bowl... because I would never feel restricted when eating it. ;)

Soup is a liquid which the band can not restrict, Soup is wasted calories that pass right thorugh the band. Those were the words from my nutritionalist through my surgeons office.

Hi California Dan,

I eat Soup for lunch with some Wheat Thins once or twice a month. It is true that it does not keep you as full as long as solid Protein will, but some Soups laden with chicken keep me quite full like tortilla soup. I usually drink the liquid first then eat the solids to give me the full feeling. Hasnt hurt my weight loss.

If your wife makes a chunky Soup, you can fish out all the chunks and minimize the liquid. She might be able to make it a little less liquid, too. It will still probably go through a little quicker, but shouldn't be a problem if all else is going well.

Of course, there will be some things that you won't eat anymore and some that you eat less, but that's part of the adjustment. It is natural to miss some foods, but the adjustment has not been as hard as I thought it would be.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
