Went to the one in ypsalanti mi. Has anyone else used Barix's? The whole process was great. My recovery was smooth and basically painless. Down 61 lbs since April 7, 2014.

Hey Kim, I was just sleeved at Barix in Ypsilanti on July 1. Everything is going well, thought the staff was great. They all seemed to have a heart. Who was your surgeon?

Hi Kim! Doctor Poplawski did my surgery. I heard really great things about Dr. Taylor. It seemed like Dr. Taylor did a lot more surgeries than Dr. Pop did.

I would say 61 pounds with the lap band in 3 months is wonderful! Can I ask why you decided on the lap band vs. gastric sleeve surgery?

I had the sleeve done. I wouldn't touch the band with a 10 ft pole lol. How are you coming along? It works out well because Dr Taylor has an office in Saginaw for post op appts. That's 30 minutes away vs 2 hours to ypsalanti.

I'm coming along pretty good. I have discovered I can no longer tolerate sugar free anything or milk products (except cheese). It only took 8 days of diarrhea to nail that one down! LOL. Your stats show the lap band, that's why I thought you had that one done.

It's about 1 1/2 hours for me to go to Ypsilanti. It would have been about the same to go to Lansing. Jackson is about 40 minutes away but it's not like there are major specialists there. And to me, this is real specialized surgery.

I'm still not able to eat very much, although I had one entire piece of string cheese this afternoon! Usually I can only do between 1 tablespoon and 2 tablespoons of food at a meal. As of today, I have lost 22 pounds since 7/1 surgery. And since getting my CPAP and Atkins diet of about 5-6 years ago, I hit 99 pounds lost as of this morning. I'm having a bit of a hard time grasping a couple pounds down a few days in a row now. It just doesn't seem possible.

How are you dealing with that part of the journey?

I went to Barix Clinic on 6/24. Dr. Pop was my surgeon as well. It was an OK experience. I stayed for 3 days because I couldn't keep anything down but by the 3rd day, I was cool. The staff is pretty cool too. I do believe this is one of the best hospitals to go to because graduating to different food stages seems a lot quicker than other facilities I've heard about.

I have days a half cup goes down fine and days that just fluids sit like a huge meal. That little pouch gets pms I swear. Oh that's awful about no sf products! I believe in the principles of Atkins, I am using it post op. 99 pounds is incredible! How do you handle no sugar free? Can you tolerate sugar?

I haven't come across any food I can't tolerate, it's just a matter of if the sleeve is in a good mood that day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
