I just wanted to introduce myself. I decided back in April that I wanted to have VS after two friends of mine had it done last year. I actually heard about this site at my last support group meeting. I don't have a surgery date yet, I'm in the middle of getting the insurance requirements done. I have one more support group meeting and two more nutrition consults to go. I bought my post-op Vitamins (Centrum chewables) and I'm in the process of looking for my Protein powder. Any suggestions for a tasty one?

I'm scared to death but I know I can't continue the way I am now. My two friends are just over a year out and are both having problems. One had to have hernia surgery and the other just found out she has stage 4 stomach cancer. The latter has really been messing with my head. I know this isn't common and everything I've read says there is no known connection between WLS and cancer. Any thoughts on this?

Welcome!

I'm sorry to hear about your friend with stomach cancer. My Mom was diagnosed at stage 4 also. The cancer would have happened sleeve or no sleeve. Again, my condolences.

As far as the Protein powders go, I've read that a lot of people like Syntrax nectar flavors and unjury chicken Soup and chocolate Splendor. Look at the ingredients list for 100% Protein isolate; that is the type of protein most easily absorbed by the body. You'll see other things like protein concentrate, casein, or a combination. Protein isolate is the best.

Also, people's tastes change after the sleeve, many preferring not such a sweet taste as they enjoyed pre-sleeve.

You will get all the particulars about what your doctor wants you to do diet-wise and when from your nutritionist.

Good luck!

Thank you! My nutritionist actually gave me a couple samples of unjury, one of them being the chicken Soup. I will definitely try them to see how they are.

I agree with BeagleLover. I also use unjury and nectar. Both are good and both websites allow you to order individual serving sizes so you can try the various flavors without buying a huge container. Welcome to WLS.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
