Day 1 of my pre-op diet, and SO many questions

Recommended Posts

Holy COW I'm hungry. Also, the shakes they have me on for Breakfast and lunch are AWFUL!

I need some tips for getting through this pre-op diet. I don't want to cheat. I just want to get through this without wanting to strangle my son for talking, or my husband for asking me to make dinner. LOL!

@@CherieRyde liquid diet is hard. No question there. It all depends on your clinic's dietary guidelines, but what we advise our patients is to test different types of shakes to see which they like best. In addition, you can make your own shakes (just keep them low carb and low fat - skim milk all the way) by mixing in fruit. You can add Protein powder if you are worried you won't get enough from other meals. You can also have popsicles and Jello if that's any consolation :)

We also allow our patients to eat strained Soups (no rice, no noddles, and no floating veggies) and some cream Soups (still keeping it low fat and low cal).

Best!

@@CherieRyde The pre-op diet is not so easy with kids and family around. The best thing to do is to ask them to support you. For the next couple of weeks maybe they can go out to eat. Have Dad take the kids out for some fun and fast food for a few days if you can.

If you totally must make dinner for the family, have a nice bottle of Water at the ready. Get yourself some Mio drops, or some crystal light or what ever you like and mix it in and drink it down as you cook, or make a nice cup of coffee get some of the sugar free flavored Creamers and enjoy it while making dinner. Another great deterrent is a piece of minty gum or brushing your teeth right before you start cooking. Nothing tastes so great with toothpaste in your mouth.

I found that for me the best way to stay on target was to schedule something every single hour. So if I was up at 7 am I was having my coffee

at 8 some Water

at 9 I was having a shake or some yogurt

10 some more water

11 shake or sugar free pudding

12 some water

1:00 some healthy choice low sodium Soup

2:00 water...etc.

Always filling that space with some water, it helps you for later when you need to get the hydration in, because for me I am NOT a water lover at all!!

If I needed a chew I would have a piece gum and chew and pop bubbles :)

I had my phone set to remind me of every hour what I was going to eat/drink and I stayed on target.

Good luck!! You'll make it!

Just do it. Thats my best advice. It was one of the most awful weeks of my life lol. I know thats a little dramatic but I was working almost every single day and I Was cranky and tired and I had terrible headaches. Just do it. Its all worth it and youll forget about it soon enough.

I did the slimfast high Protein Shakes. They were actually pretty delicious. I still do a shake for Breakfast. During the liquid diet, I did 4 shakes and lived on chicken broth, sugar free Jello and ice pops. You'll get through it, just try to stay positive :)

I was allowed to add sugar free pudding flavors to my shakes...really helped with the thickness...which kept me satiated and gave me variety. PB2 helps as well (dry powdered peanut butter). I recommend mixing any flavor with vanilla protien. Experiment adding ice and sugar free Syrup from the coffee isle too. 0 calories 0 carbs. :-). Find something you like, because you need to stick with it to shrink that liver. Plus, you will be stuck drinking shakes after surgery too...I was soooo sick of them by the time I was going on mushies. But like them occasionally now.

I also use powdered Peanut Butter. Mix it with chocolate Protein Powder and unsweetened chocolate almond milk. Delicious.

This was so helpful. So many of my questions were answered, I have a family also and the thought of getting through two weeks without any food is extremely difficult for me. Getting the lap band surgery is so scary for me, but I am scared not to get it. I am so happy that I found this app, it has been so helpful. I was driving my husband crazy with all of my questions, concerns apprehensiveness. Talking to people who understand is so helpful.

I completely agree.

Some things I've learned since starting this diet that may be helpful for other beginners:

1) Changes for you also mean changes for your family. Make sure they understand that.

2) Ask your spouse to do the grocery shopping. Walking through the grocery store while you aren't allowed to eat any of the things you are buying is torture. Not only that, but you'll be shopping hungry .. which means a higher grocery bill. I got the shakes and almost threw up about halfway through my shopping trip because I was so hungry. NOT fun.

3) No, you can NOT stop at a fast food place for the hubby and kids on the way home. Either they can have what's already in the house, or hubby can take the kids out for a Daddy Date at whichever restaurant they intend to go to. Again ... it's torture driving home with the bag of food in the seat next to you, filling the car with yummy smells that you aren't allowed to touch, and it makes you nauseous.

I'm on day 7 now, and I have my final pre-op appointment with my surgeon in 2 hrs. I know that as of 2 days ago I'm down to 240 (according to my scale at home). I'm looking forward to seeing where I am today. Good luck!

Going to the grocery store isn't that bad for me. I've bought my son pizza. I'm OK with it.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
