Hello everyone...

Newbie here...I came home from a business trip to find my APPROVAL letter in the mail! So excited...hopefully will get a surgery date tomorrow.

Ok, my stats...I'm 49 years old and 5'2".

On January 1st I weighed myself. 273.5 yikes! That same day I gave up all carbs, alcohol, sweets, caffeine and fast food. I've been eating healthy ever since. I have lost 41 lbs on my own. Went through the 6 month supervised weight loss plan, psych evaluation, nutritionist appointments etc...had my 6 month weigh in on June 19th. Weighed 232 so yay me!

Got my approval letter in the mail today, and am hoping to get a surgery date tomorrow.

The 6 months FLEW by. I stayed busy, stayed focused and did my research. So excited to be moving forward on my journey...

Any advise from any of you on here's regarding how best to prepare for my surgery and my recovery? I live alone, but my daughter lives close enough to be of help.

Help? :)

First of all congratulations! I know the feeling! I am 7days out and it's the best decision I've ever made. Well, where do I stArt....first I had to complete a 2 week pre-op diet, which was 2-3 Protein Shakes and one meal but all doctors are different but just in case I would start sampling some Protein shakes. Also, I found that having my husband and boys with me was helpful, especially because I live in a two-story. Also, I find getting in and out if bed and shower was hard the first couple of days. I was really sore and in pain....BUT I DONT REGET A THING,!!

Thank you for your response! Congrats to you! I got my date today...my surgery is set for the 5th of August! That's in 3 weeks...OMG!

I've been drinking Protein Drinks daily since January so that's the easy part :) I'm taking time off of work, so I'll be applying for disability...I think that makes me nervous...don't like being strapped for cash...

Update!

Started my pre op diet today...funny thing is though...I've been eating this way since January 1st. I thought for sure I would have to do a 2 week liquid diet?

I'm doing 2 shakes and 1healthy meal a day for 14 days. Anyone else doing this?

I'm sooooo excited about the surgery but to be honest...I don't know if I'm more excited about the time off that I get for recovery?!

I haven't had a vacation in 14 years so yeah...I'm pretty dang happy.

Just wanted to share...I love reading all of your posts on here...had really helped me prepare...

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
