3 weeks post-op & im constantly hungry!

Recommended Posts

After surgery I was surprised at the not being hungry feeling but by week 2 my cravings for food had got outrageous, it's all that's on my mind and when I eat I get sick because I have that hunger that makes me eat faster than I should. I can't really tolerate any meat or fish so I've been sticking to Soups and Popsicles, occasionally I'll have a mashed carrot or sweet potato... I eat until I'm satisfied but then a hr later I'm hungry once again as if my stomach just wants more than what I've been eating. idk what to do anymore???? Anyone please help!!!!

Are you actually physically hungry? Or is it head hunger?

Hi Amanda - I too had terrible hunger (in my case, right from the start) - definitely NOT head hunger. My doc said it's the brain getting used to the new anatomy and it happens to around 1 in 10 patients. It was so bad that I wished I hadn't had the surgery - very unpleasant and a little scary. He told me I just had to grit my teeth and bear it and it would go away eventually. It did! Took about 4-6 weeks but by the time I was on soft food I started to feel "full" and not have hunger all the time.

Be very careful to follow the diet plan so you don't delay the healing process. I know it's tempting to eat more - but it doesn't help anyway. Carefully go through the stages of liquids only - pureed food - Soft foods etc as directed by your doc. So sorry this has happened to you too - but honestly it will get better with time.

I am 10 days out. Just the last two days I feel like Im starving. Im not sure if its the flat taste of everything or if its my head. I do stick to the liquds and the diet but its so hard. Remember your mind is just so confused. It still thinks you have the abilities to eat all we want. It will get better! Im looking forward to it getting better...

Drink! Just drink and drink and drink until you are too full (but not in pain) to eat anything. That sounds awful I know but I did that after my sleeve and once I drank and got full food didn't sound as good to me. It's tough but give it time, it should get easier.

I had that feeling a lot during my third week, sometimes it's a result of anxiety, but other times is because you really want to eat. Drink your liquids, it'll be better soon cutie<3
