hypothyroidism and Ameriben

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am new here and praying to get the gastric sleeve surgery. I am a TUSD employee with Ameriben and they will begin to cover beg Sep 1 2014. I have read that they will not accept any one with hyprothyroidism. Does anyone here have that issue? I have not yet applied. I am afraid they will deny me. I was diagnosed while preg with my 6 yr old, and been on med since. Do you thing going off of it would be helpful to see if lab work before approval would come out normal? Will they request my med records with thyroid med previously being on there?

Thank you Jaxwaqu.

Jaxwaqu1, Hello I too have Hypothyroidism and my insurance also says in all the writing that they don't cover patients with Hypothyroidism but when I went to my surgeon and mentioned that , the Nurse quickly told me that if a Person has been under treatment and taking care of it , they will cover but if it isn't being taken care of is when they deny coverage . Now yours may be different but this is how they said cigna works.

Jaxwaqu1... I have Ameriben through TUSD too...I'm curious if you ever got approved? I go in for my Pysch tomorrow and then "technically" I should be done with my prerequisites. However, I am terrified that I am going to be denied because I don't have the 5 year requirement documented. I didn't even know about the hypothyroid thing and now I'm worried about that as well! I've been on medication for years now to treat it. What I'm really worried about is my surgeons office was given the wrong pre-reqs BY AMERIBEN! I had to call and quote the online benefit literature before they conceded that they may have been using the old pre-reqs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
