Vacation; things to eat

Recommended Posts

I'm leaving on vacation this week and I know there will be alot of stop and go eating for the family. Does anyone have advice on good food selections? I'm almost 4 weeks post op and scared to eat out.

Eating out is easier than it sounds. Look at the sides and get a side of refried Beans, some baked chicken wings, a pork or chicken taco and eat just the inside, any baked chicken is good and I like Tomato basil Soup too. Worse case, see if you can order just half a sandwhich and just eat the middle tuna salad, meat or whatever and toss the bread. Ask the server if you can order just a scoop of tuna or chicken salad or whatever. Most restaurants are accommodating. We eat out a lot and I can get a side of ham for Breakfast and have enough to share or if my husband gets a steak, sometimes they will have a side of grilled shrimp he can add on so I take a few and that's my dinner. Fast food, look for small grilled chicken wraps and eat just the chicken and cheese. I love Carls Jr grilled chicken and you can order it without sauce and bun so they will wrap the chicken in lettuce leaves. I just eat the chicken, cheese and grilled pepper and toss the rest and its enough for two meals.

We are now officially really cheap dates!

Almost 4 weeks out? Be very careful. I choked on a small piece of soft chicken at 5 weeks, and stayed on pureed 2 more weeks. You can do anything you want Nikki, but I recommend sticking to soft foods, such as bisque, yogurt, string cheese to nibble, a scrambled or boiled egg, refried Beans, etc. You can always add unflavored Protein powder to yogurt, or better yet, take a few Premier Protein shakes and you are good to go. They will satisfy you and you will not have time to worry about eating. Pack a small cooler with your go to foods. I could not eat lettuce until 3 months post surgery and love the salads now. You will be amazed that food will not be the focus of your vacation! Have fun!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
