The best way to know for sure is to call the 800 number and speak to the pre-cert/coverage department. They can also send you a PDF of your Full Plan Document. That usually spells out the requirements piece by piece.

Thank you I did try to do that. Some reps tell me yes others tell me no and some are honest and says he doesn't specify :(.

I have BCBS and was told that diet needed to be doctor supervised, so WW would not count.

I have BCBS of Missouri and my primary did the medically supervised diet. However, my surgeon's office did ask if I had any documented WW (like my doctor was aware), because that would have counted. Of course, every policy is different. Good Luck!!

@@cchapman6 I also should have said, my insurance only required 3 months not 6, so yet another difference :)

8I have BC/BS of OH and WW did count. All they wanted was a record of weight for a couple years. I didn't even need to show proof of "doctors supervised diet" as stated in my insurance requirements. I wrote down every single diet I tried over the years and didn't provide a shred of evidence. They took my word. The NUT wrote a letter of recommendation for the surgery based on what I provided to him. I was told by my provider (they deal with all different types of insurance) that the specific diet program doesn't matter....its that you tried something in the past Was also told that sometimes the insurance company asks for a letter of recommendation from your private care doctor stating you tried and sometimes they dont. At least this was what I went through. It can be different from state to state. I was approved in 9 days. The longest wait has been the surgery....had to take a vacant surgery time....first one available on the day they scheduled me was 8/11, from 7/8.

Just for anyone else that was wondering weight watchers does count for BCBS CA! But make sure you have 6 months consecutive dr. Prescribed exercise.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
