Do you like foods you used to dislike?

Recommended Posts

I've read a lot about how tastes can change after surgery and how people can no longer tolerate the shakes they used to or the sweets they did but I'm wondering if anyone has found that they now like foods they didn't prior to surgery?

I am a super picky eater (pretty sure I'm a Supertaster) and the list of foods I don't like is long - nearly all vegetables, tomatoes, black/refried Beans, oil-based salad dressing, any type of bread that isn't white - just trying to think of foods that would come up in the post-surgery diet but honestly, I could never list out everything. I'm wondering if I can maintain a shred of hope that I'll suddenly find myself liking/enjoying foods that I couldn't stand before surgery or if that's just not likely to happen.

I like Greek yogurt now. Never liked it before. Most everything else is the same for me. The things I hated I still hate and the things I liked I still like. For a little bit I hated my body fortress shakes but that was immediately post surgery. Now they are fine.

I was never a Soup person and still not a huge fan, but I do crave it when eating out. Nothing else, because I used to eat everything. :)

I do crave things I was never a big fan of---roasted veggies, cottage cheese, tofu, zuccinni, milk, yogert--not things that would make me hurl or anything before, but thinks I never would seek out and might actually avoid pre op.

Certain meats taste very 'metallic', if that makes any sense...especially turkey sausage. But also strangely enough, turkey BACON tastes great to me now!! Also coleslaw was something I couldn't stand pre-surgery, but post-surgery it tastes very good to me!! Not sure what's up with that!!

It's not necessarily foods that I didn't like, although this is new to me and I have already had pureed turkey and I never ate turkey, I hated it! I really liked it though.

Much of my taste buds are very different, it started in the hospital with "blue raspberry" popsicle ... it tasted like a sweet pickle! I'm finding a lot of those things since my 7/1 surgery.

Breakfast was my favorite meal of the day Pre surgery and I loved sandwiches...Ketchup??? It was always what was I going to have WITH my ketchup. I am 14 weeks post op today and have not had breakfast food since the day before surgery. The thought of it makes me gag. Ketchup...literally I throw up in my mouth if I smell it and bread...I have NO desire for it.

Yes! Yes! And Yes! It seems everything for me has flip flopped. I used to be a big meat eater, especially chicken, could have it at every meal. Now, the smell or even thought of meat makes me nauseous. I'm still able to eat 2 or 3 shrimp and keep it down, but all other meats hit my stomach like a lead weight, and usually come right back up. And I've tried every kind in every way possible except fried. I'm only 8 wks out and hoping this gets better. Also Ive now become a fruit lover, before I hated fruit. Same thing with tea. Couldn't stand the smell or taste of it pre-op and now diet snapple is all I crave and can tolerate. My list goes on. I thought it was just me, glad its not :)

I was Soo hungry an believe it or not I pinned an saved them all!! Lol...I guess mentally I'm in super clean eating mode with new lifestyle but of course we have ate organically along time..Haha..

It's funny, I used to be the exact opposite (very adventurous eater), I loved trying new things. Now I literally get sick at the thought of some foods. Weird!

So far I haven't tried much I didn't like as I'm still in soft foods for 2 more weeks. But I used to love tuna fish sandwiches so I tried tuna over the weekend and boy I can't stand it now. So I curious to later try foods I didn't like when I can. I'm craving scallops and before surgery I wasn't not a fish eat (except the tuna).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
