No fluids for 1hr. before and after meals?

Recommended Posts

Think of your banded stomach as a funnel in the top of a big jar. If you put a can of Tomato paste in it, it's going to stay there quite awhile before it makes it's way though the narrow part of the funnel and into the big jar. But if you put tomato ketchup in the funnel, it will go down through pretty quickly. Eating with food dilutes the food and makes it thinner and pass through your band faster. You don't feel full as long.

mine is quit drinking 30 minutes before eating, and no drinking for at least one hour after eating...it takes some getting use to, but I don't really have a problem with this...

My doc says nothing 30 mins prior or 45 mins after, but I still find that difficult. Hasn't seemed to hurt much to stray from it a bit though.

For me, if I try to drink with meals I get stuck. It's uncomfortable. I can't do it. So I drink until a few minutes prior, and then 1-2 hours after.

:help: Is anyone having any problems NOT drinking fluids before, during and after meals? My Dr. says NO fluids 1 hour before, No during and None for 1 hour after meals. That is killing me. I have slowed way down, but just can't stop it completely. Anyone else having this problem? I'm also having problems NOT getting the FULL Feeling. Could the drink be my problem?:help: HELP!!

Hi Saltlick, I do have a problem not drinking with my meals which is a big NO NO. It's hard to change this habit but I know it has to be done. My doctor told me not to drink a half hour before and after and nothing with meals. The reason they don't want you drinking with meals is because it will defeat the purpose of having ther lap band in the first place. By not drinking, your food stays in the upper small pouch made by the lap band. This in turn gives you a full feeling. By not drinking, the food will stay in this upper pouch longer and you will feel satisfied longer. But there is way around this. You can end up cheating and your weight lose compromised which is happening to me right now. If you drink with your meals you are washing the food down past the band which empties your little pouch. The food is pushed into your lower, larger portion of your stomach. If you do this the whole time your eating you keep emptying your upper pouch. You can end up eating a whole lot more than if you don't drink. It's hard not to drink with meals but it's harder not to see the weight come off. Someone on this forum (Eddie) gave me a great tip. Use a shot glass and fill with a piece of ice and Water and wait until you're finished with your meal and drink that water. At least this makes you feel like you're washing down your food. A shot glass is one ounce. I thought this was a great tip! Good luck everyone! Elee

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
