Questions re: food scale and cookbooks

Recommended Posts

I'm currently 1-2 months pre-op RNY, trying to prepare everything for post-op. How important do you feel it is to have a food scale and weigh your foods? Is it not enough, in your opinion, to estimate your portions? Also, since money is an issue for me, do you have any suggestions for good inexpensive scales?

And do you have any suggestions for good cookbooks for post-surgery? I'm looking for simple recipes that don't require a lot of ingredients and don't cost a lot. Any help you can offer is much appreciated!

Yes you must measure your food either on a scale or in measuring cups or measuring spoons.

I bought my digital scale from Zulily and it was under $15 and it's great.

For easy recipes go to the site The World According To Eggface. Look it up on Google.

She has recipes for all stages of the plan.

Good luck with pre op and post op.

Take care and wish you well with your surgery.

I got one at Bed Bath and Beyond and used my 20% coupon and the price wasn't terrible. I would have chosen a less expensive one, but my fiance picked it out and bought it......

Measuring food is absolutely critical. It is extremely difficult to guess what a serving size is, and most of us over estimate. I got a nice digital scale at Target for about $25.00 and absolutely love it. That said, you can find them under $10.00 and they will work just fine. I will just say, this is something that I use multiple times every day, so having one I like is important.

As for recipes and cookbooks, there are many places online where you can find recipes for different stages - you can also make over your own favorites. I use MyFitnessPal.com to track everything I eat. It is free. You can enter any recipe and how many servings it makes and it will calculate the calories, fat, carbs, and Protein for you. Works Great!! I am over a year post-surgery and I use it every day. Next to my RNY it has been the best weight loss and now weight management tool I have every found. I would encourage you to begin using it now.

Best of luck!!

Carol

I bought my scale from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FF16B8E/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) It was under $20 when I bought it, but I'd happily buy it again at the current $26.

I test myself about once a month to see how far off my "estimate" is from what it really ends up on the scale. Until I'm better about it, I plan to continue using the scale whenever possible.
