Protein shakes making me Nauseous

Recommended Posts

After 5 weeks of using Protein shakes they are now making me nauseous. Thinking of bypassing the shakes and just getting flavored powdered Protein to mix in my Water. Any other ideas or suggestions?

I've noticed a slight nausea after using 2 scoops instead of 1 of the Unjury. I also feel nauseated if I drink too quickly. Have you tried to drink it more slowly?

I've tried drinking slower and also adding some fruit to it thinking if it had a different taste I may be able to tolerate it a bit more. Not such luck.

Hi,

I haven't yet had my procedure but have used a lot of Protein shakes in the past. Sweeteners like Malitol and anything with a "tol" in the name can cause extreme nausea and diarrhea. If you've ever had "sugar-free" candy, etc., you may have noticed that it makes you nauseous. I've made a note to check for these artificial sugars on the Protein Shakes because I'll need the versions that don't use Malitol, etc. Take a look at the ingredients and if you see this, try using a shake that uses something else. Just an idea. And thanks for posting this because it is a good reminder for me!

Well, it's an acquired taste but you might want to try the Isopure Protein drinks. They look like juice or flavored/color Water. But they are 40 grams of Protein. Once you get used to them, they are quite nice. But, they do have a funny flavor at first.

You can get them at the Vitamin Shop. I've even found smaller bottles at Rite Aid but they don't carry them very often. If you can find the small bottles, try those first. They come in a wide variety of flavors. I would not recommend getting your favorite flavor to start with since you might not like it and that might throw you off these for good. The grape isn't bad. It's at least an option because those protein shakes can seem vile after a while! lol

Jay Robb Protein powders use Stevia as their sweetener.

I use them and have had no problems.

You might want to give them a try.

If you buy your Protein at The Vitamin Shop, they will let you return or exchange it if you don't like it, just save the receipt! I totally understand your frustration! I believe that the unflavored protein still has somewhat of a taste to it so I would definitely buy it from somewhere you can return it if you don't like it! I had the problem of every Protein Shake being wayyy too sweet after surgery! It was trial and error until I found one I could tolerate! It was Isopure Dutch chocolate it wasn't too sweet and it didnt make me feel sick! I tried Jay Robb and it was good but made me feel sick : ( they also have sample packs at The Vitamin Shop as well by the checkout! Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
