Utah Dr. recommendations??

Recommended Posts

Hi Utah bandsters!!

I grew up in Utah and my family still lives there... my mom is looking in to having the surgery done in the next month or so... since I don't live there and I had my surgery in Mexico I don't know who to recommend in the area.

She's in Utah Valley but I'm guessing she'll probably have to go to the SLC area.

Any recommendations??

If your mom has insurance then my comments are not relevant. But if she does not then she might want to consider Dr. Kirshenbaum in Denver (see web site in my signature). He does the surgery for $9950, with fills forever for $15. I know Denver is not exactly walking distance, it's not too far, and if mom is paying herself it might be something to consider.

Good luck

Hi Ruthie! My surgeon was Dr. Hansen with South Valley Surgical and I thought he was great! I've been very happy with my follow up treatment there. The nurses are the heart and soul of that office and really care about patients. One of the reasons I chose Dr. Hansen is his office offers support groups (including psychosocial support, nutrition and exercise).

I made a list of all the bariatric offices in Salt Lake (not sure if your mom lives elsewhere) and which hospitals they are affiliated with. Hope this helps!

South Valley Surgical (Alta View)

Dr. Hanafy Hanafy was in Utah last time I checked, but I think he's moved to Washington.

I'm getting banded on May 14th by Dr. Mckeen in Orem. He is out of South Bay Bariatrics in California but he is originally from Payson. He flies out every other monday to do surgeries here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
