Constant Bathroom Issues

Recommended Posts

I'm sort of at the end of my rope. Since I was sleeved 6/26, I have been eating according to my NUT guidelines, yet as soon as I eat something I'm running to the bathroom nearly immediately.

When I was on full liquids this seemed to make sense, but now I'm on purée and just today - had a bit of egg salad for lunch and after maybe 10 minutes...again. I've had no real issue with tuna which also is made with mayo so I can't figure out the trigger. It's just scary and I hope this stops happening since I'm supposed to be returning to work soon! I don't want to live on liquid Imodium just to make it stop! If anyone has any suggestions or tips I'd greatly appreciate it!! :)

Have you told your doctor and been checked for other causes?

I did tell my doctor and she wasn't concerned. She said it's to be expected and would get better once I got out of liquids and onto more purée foods. It slowed down a little but it's still an issue - figured I'd see if you guys had any ideas before I hit the panic button and called again. :)

Maybe Probiotics (the good multi strain 20 billion + CFU kind that are refrigerated and found at most health or whole food stores) and soluble Fiber like benefiber or even canned pumpkin could help bulk things up.

That's a very good point - I've taken in Protein and liquids and didn't even think about fiber - which I just looked and have had 0 fiber!! :)

It took me two weeks before things turned and then I had a week or two of Constipation. One thing to watch out for is fats. The mayo your using could be a trigger. I used kraft fat free mayo. Give that a shot. And pay attention to the fat content of anything else you eat. Also yogurt is good for digestion.

I had diarrhea for the better part of the first 4 months. My surgery was February 24, and the worst of it was during full liquids right though the whole pureed stage. It improved somewhat after going to full solids on April 24. Now I'm coming up on 5 months post-op, and things have calmed down even more.

I mentioned it all along the way to my PCP, surgeon and nutritionist and none were particularly concerned. My nutritionist did advise to try to incorporate (1) small amount of vegetables a day (I was doing all Protein, all the time), and a small amount of greek yogurt daily. That has helped, and hasn't been terribly detrimental to my weight loss efforts so far.

I hope things improve for you! I know how frustrating it can be. For me, anything that had too much fat was my trigger. mayo was a big no-no. But once you figure out what foods move through more quickly, you can adjust accordingly.

Be well…

Since surgery 17 days ago, I've had trouble with gas and diahrea. I've concluded that I've become lactose intolerant. So I am now using Lactaid milk and cottage cheese and Lactaid chewables when I eat other dairy. I also discovered that only whey Protein isolate is lactose free. Most Protein shakes use whey Protein concentrate too...so when I try one of these again, I will take a Lactaid chewable. I'll see how it goes and let you know.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
