I took my pills the day after surgery whole.

The Vitamins you don't start for two weeks after surgery and those should be mostly chewables so they absorb properly.

If you need help with what to buy for chewables just ask and we can answer that or your surgeon will tell you.

Congrats for having decided to have surgery.

I also took many of my meds whole. It really wasn't an issue for me, I just made sure to wait a minute or two between meds. Like the others said, try to get liquids (no sugar though) or chewables or sublinguals if you can. Another option if you can't tolerate the pills or capsules is to look into using a compounding pharmacy and having hem made into liquids.

Again, it depends on your clinic's recommendations and what the meds are for. I started my chewable vitamins right away. Some of my pills needed to be cut in half at first. I had a nurse and pharmacist that went over my med list and told me what to take, not take and how to take it. If you clinic does not offer to do this for you, ask for it. Then you can be sure what you are doing is right for you.

I took my pain meds as whole tablets without problems early on. I used chewable Vitamins per my surgeon, and transitioned to tablet Vitamins after about 2 weeks post op. Your surgeon may have his/her own protocol for how they want you to handle pills versus chewables versus liquids.

Hmm...be careful here, some medications can't be crushed. You should have gone over your meds before surgery, however some can be prescribed in liquid, chewable, or even sprinkle form where you can just put it over your soft food and eat it. :P I had an issue not connected to my bypass where I was placed on oral pain meds for too long and ate an ulcer right into my pouch, so just make sure to talk with your doctor.

You can definitely take your pills several minutes apart. One or two with some Water and then 5-10 minutes and take some more. Because I've had to add more supplements to my regimen due to migraines(magnesium, butterbur, feverfew) I've started splitting things up again to make it easier on my pouch. :) Just do what is easiest and best for you.

You know... I went from about 1 metric ton of pills to keep me out of pain, keep me alive, keep me up, keep me down, counteract the side effects of other pills, and Vitamins and supplements.... to three pills. I just take them each morning with my Breakfast shake. Whole.

I am looking at these comments and a little surprised. My surgeon told me I had to crush everything all the time (or get chewable). I would love it I could go back to taking them whole (as my pills are not that big) as my 2 at night are so bitter I have been skipping them once in a while (they are for other conditions and not related to nutrition/vitamins etc). Has anyone else been told they have to crush? For how long and what size pills?

I have been taking all my meds whole since surgery. If the pills are real big you may half to cut them in half. My Vitamins are chewable.< /p>

I had to crush them or get a liquid substitute for the first 30 days. After that I could take pills no larger than a Tylenol. At first, when I tried to take my regular meds whole, sometimes they got stuck which was painful and very unpleasant! My Calcium and multi need to be chewable but my D and Biotin are small enough not to cause problems.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
