Newbie looking for support

Recommended Posts

Can't believe I'm doing this....this is my mid-life crisis :). So I finally got the courage to start the process of WLS on my 50th birthday. I'm so excited but scared at the same time!!! Due to insurance req I have to go thru supervised weight program for 6 months. I thought it was going to seem like a year but it's flown by cuz of all the appts I've had to go thru. Now I only have one month to go. I just got my surgery date of September 4th. I'm soooo psyched!!!!! I'm doing the "skinny dance". Can't wait to be able to do more things with my family that I just can't do now.

So I was hoping to connect with people that will be having sleeve surgery around same time so we can support each other. Also I live in Massachusetts. Is there anyone out there from MA?

Welcome! This is an awesome site and you will find lots of support. It was my looming 50th (in August) that spurred me to take control as well. I'm not as far along in the journey as you are...I just started my 3 months supervised diet and because of a preplanned vacation/work load I'm shooting for surgery in early December. I'll look for your posts! Beth PS am in AZ where it is finally raining some!

Congrats for making the decision for WLS. You will not be sorry. This is a great site, I follow it often but usually don't respond. I read your post and wanted to affirm that 50 is a great time to make these changes. I started my journey last November after turning 56. I was 245 and so unhealthy and unhappy. I lost some weight pre-op and went to surgery on April 9th 2014. I was 215. I have had no complications and today weigh 162. I can't tell you have much better I feel. I HONESTLY feel and look 15 years younger. I wish I had did it earlier! Oh and by the way, I live in Western Massachusetts!

Thank you to everyone. I'll keep reading so I can focus on the positives and hopefully overcome the down falls that may happen along the way. I love hearing the good stories!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well, I flew in from China to have my operation in Houston where my parents live. I did a lot of research on which doctor I wanted to perform the operation, which I am so happy I did because. He did a phenomenal job. I had my operation on June 25, that was a Wednesday, Thursday I was still in the hospital, Friday and Saturday I had discomfort but walked around the house and I stayed in bed, but Sunday I was ready to go out, still taking it slow, and have a good time.

Today make 2 1/2 weeks postop, and I am still feeling fantastic. My discomfort has gone, I have no pain, and no nausea. I am pretty much able to take down anything I want.

I am lactose intolerant, so in that retrospect I still cannot have anything with dairy, which isn't a big deal because I couldn't have it before. :)

My doctor wants me to do three weeks full liquid, three weeks puréed, and three weeks soft.

The problem is, I feel so fantastic that I want to just skip to the next level and do two weeks, and then skip to the next level do two weeks. I am having such a hard time sticking to just full liquids.

So far, I have lost 24 pounds (SW 245) since the operation on June 25.

As far as Protein drinks goes, I am using Isopure which is lactose-free, and they actually taste great. I've been buying the package portions because I do travel a lot and it helps me to actually just have it in a pouch portioned where I can just shake it up and drink it.

All in all, I wish you the best of luck. I think this is the best thing I have done so far and hope you feel the same too. ^_^

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
