Surgery with a one-year-old

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to have my surgery on the 16th! I just got approval from my insurance this past Monday, so I'm excited it's actually going to happen!

But now I'm starting to get worried about after my surgery. I have a son who just turned one. I'm his primary caretaker until I start work again on July 23rd (I'm a teacher). My mom will help me the first few days during the day, and my husband will help in the evenings and on the weekend. But I'm still nervous about managing a rambunctious, newly-walking one-year-old. Advice? Suggestions?

Also, am I crazy for going back to work a week after surgery? It'll just be orientation (i.e. meetings) the first week and a half.

Congrats on your surgery date ! Woo hoo ! I went back to work 1 week after surgery ( on my feet all day, part time), I felt fine, just moved a little slower than usual. Glad I was able to take it easy as I healed. As far as your child, could you hire a neighbor teen or somebody for just the days when your mom wont be there ? For child care and /or light housekeeping ? It would probably only be for a week - 10 days until you're sure you're back on your feet. One year olds are pretty active , you 'll need all the help/rest you can get. The last thing you want is for you to tear stitches, or hurt yourself lifting a busy active child . Ouch !! Good luck !

I have a one year old and a 3 year old. It was hard to take care of them after the surgery for about 2 weeks. I was extremely sore. My mom stayed with us to help and my husband helped in the evenings. But everyone is different. Maybe you won't be as sore as I was. Good luck.

Congratulations on your decision and all the best to you in your procedure and recovery! I was just banded yesterday and I have a 3 year old She is VERY active and seemingly all she wants to do is attempt to ram into me head first into my tummy. My mother in law and my husband have helped greatly. They keep her busy, entertain her or just keep watchful eye over her when we're both interacting so I don't pick her up or let her lay on my tummy. It's hard. I miss the bonding already and I think she's taking it personal. :-( But i just keep reminding myself that it's temporary.

I'm going back to work in 1 week. If things keep progressing the way they are now - I should be in good shape to do so.

Good Luck!

Good advice..take all the help you can get. My youngest is 14, I can't imagine having a little one..I slept, sipped, walked, and slept. My surgery hit me pretty hard. I usually have a high tolerance of pain and I've had many surgeries. The gas pain was the worst for me. Finally on the other side of that and only a few weeks out. I feel great now, better everyday. I was told No lifting for 4 to 6 weeks. Hope you can find a babysitter as mentioned earlier. Really going to need the rest to recover. Hopefully you will have an easier time than I did. A lot of people Dont even need pain meds. Praying for you. Congratulations on beginning a new and exciting chapter in your life. Focus on all the energy you will have soon to enjoy your family!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
