Hi, Kristin,

I just noticed that your note is dated 2007! Did you have the surgery? How are you doing? I'm getting the lap band through Mercy Hospital and Dr. Machado. Mercy requires 6 months of meetings, etc. I am done with all that and will hopefully get the lap band in a few weeks! I am so glad it is almost here. Assuming you got the surgery and have had the lap band for 4 years, I would love to hear from you regarding your journey since lap band.

Sincerely,

Mavis

My surgery is scheduled for April 28, 2011 with Dr. Machado. I'm really happy with her and her staff so far. I wasn't able to make it to the support group meeting at Sutter Cancer center yet. Today was the 3rd Saturday, I really wanted to go. But, my husband misunderstood what time I said it started. I needed him to watch the kids. I'd like to hear about how people dealt with the emotions of their spouses. My husband is expressing his fear that I will lose weight and leave him. He has heard that happened to other couples after the wife has weight loss surgery. That is not my plan. I am doing this for my own health and well being. Any advice?

Hi!

How are you feeling? I hope to get the lap band in a few weeks (Dr. Machado). You have already lost 8 pounds! Fantastic! How do you feel? Any suggestions for Protein? Are there any support groups you know of other than the Sutter meetings? I went to that one once a couple of months ago. There were only 5 people there, but they were nice, and helpful. They told me about this website, for one! Regarding the marriage question, many moons ago, I was married. I was pretty thin when I got married, then gained weight over the 5 years we were married. When I lost the weight, my husband was very happy. When I regained it, we got a divorce! haha Not the only reason, of course. But the bottom line is, you have got to do it for yourself and your health. Everything else will work out the way it is supposed to.

Hi Mavis,

Thanks for the last couple of sentences. I try to relax and let go of the outside stresses. I'm learning I can't change other people or their fears. I totally agree with you. Everything works out exactly as it is supposed to.

I had my surgery 6 days ago. I felt pretty good the first two days. The next 3 days I felt lousy. The gas pain has finally let up from my shoulder. But, gas keeps coming up from my tummy. Anytime I stand up, I have to brace myself for the bubble of pain that goes up the center of my chest. It is wierd, it doesn't result in a burp. It just suddenly goes away. I also found that I have a similar pain if I take more than 2 small sips in a row. I have to wait 3-5 minutes between sips. So, I am reminding myself that this is just the left over gas trying to get out. Instead of trying to avoid it, I need to be welcoming to it so it gets the heck out of my body! ha ha I read that a lot of people are done with the gas in about 2 weeks. So, I am half done. Yay!

The Protein powder I like is GNC's AMP chocolate or vanilla. It is 20g whey Protein per scoop. For variety I add sugar free Torani Syrup. I mix it in a Magic Bullet. For the presurgery liquid diet, I tried one more variation...add 1 Tab Peanut Butter to the chocolate. It was pretty good. I am on Clear liquids right now, so the Peanut Butter will have to wait. I can mix the Protein Powder with nonfat milk. I also like the premade banana Muscle Milk.

I go for my post-op appt. tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to move to full liquids.< /p>

As for the sutures, one itches a little, 3 don't bother me, and the port incision hurts and makes getting comfortable difficult. I know eventually, it won't hurt, but I don't know how long. Bending over and sitting up really aggrevate the port site.

Weight loss. In Jan I was 228. I started attending OA. In Feb I had my first appt with Dr. Machado. My weight was down to 222. A week before surgery I was 218 (thanks to OA, still). liquid preop diet got me down to 214. Day 1 post op 214, day 2 215, day 3 215, day 4 213, day 5 210, day 6 208.

Dr. Machado's office hosts a once a month support group. There was one last night, but I wasn't feeling up to the 1 hour drive. I don't know of any other lap-band specific support groups. I attend an OA meeting once per week. That really helps me with the mind hunger, emotional/stress eating, extra eating due to free food or social food, and how to start to love and appreciate myself for the effort I am putting forth, even if I am not perfect in what I eat.

Good luck with your surgery. Keep me posted.

Hi, gMommy,

Thank you so much for responding, and for sharing your experience. I am so sorry you are feeling so physically bad, but like you said, and as my Mom always said, "This too shall pass!" Hopefully your appointment will give you some answers, and hope for relief.

I am going to be at Dr. Machado's office tomorrow, too! I have an appointment with the nutritionist at 2:30. So we may actually run into each other! But if not, it is still wonderful to compare notes on this website. I am SO glad the Sutter support group told me about this website! I have already learned so much!

For instance, your (and other's) post-surgery sharing has really helped to prepare me, to know that such experiences are normal! And, thank you for your suggestions on the mixtures for the Protein drinks! I too love Peanut Butter and I was wondering about adding it to the "shakes". So I will try it before surgery, and look forward to it again when it is possible after surgery.

You mentioned the pre-surgery liquid diet. No one has told me yet about that regarding Dr. Machado patients. How long is the liquid pre-surgery diet?? I know it is supposed to be good to shrink your liver and make the surgery and recovery process better. Aren't you glad you did it...otherwise, your post surgery might have been worse!

Anyway, hope you are feeling better tomorrow, and moreso each day thereafter. Happy losing!!! Keep in touch!

Mavis

I am planning to have the surgery in early 2012. Part of my insurance requirements is to track for 6 months prior to requesting approval. My last appointment for the tracking is December 14, 2011 and then all the paperwork can be submitted to my Insurance for approval (fingers crossed they don't deny me). I am suppose to loose 30 lbs (I think by either December 14 or the day of the surgery). Either way I have lost a total of 2 lbs in 4 months. I want to cry!! Anyone have any advice for me. One would think I eat all day long, but really I have a desk job and at the most will have a cup of coffee and a packet of instant oatmeal all day at work (9-10 hours) and then I go home and have fast food for dinner. That is my downfall, and I am doing my best to break that. This past month eating out has been cut down to once a week for the most part. This past week, I started bringin two Yoplait Yogurts, 2 Protein Bars (high in Protein, atleast 20g, and low in sugar usually 1-10g but sometimes 18g). I bring an apple, a banana, and a Protein shake, but I can't find a Protein Shake I like. Anyone know where I can sample some at?? I am currently using the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chocolate which is super sweet to me. The strawberry I put in Simply lemonade, but again the lemonade is probably pretty bad with the sugar it has in it. I am so lost and I am just not sure what to do. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions??

Thanks,

Suzette

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?
