I have been told that soda will be a no no, that won't bother me, but someone recently said that coffee will also be off limits. Is it true?

My doctor has the rule -- no caffeine, no calories, no carbonation with regards to drinks (except milk). I'm drinking Water, crystal light, decaff green tea with Splenda, Vitamin Water Zero...

I know other people are allowed caffeine but my doctor said none... it can interfere with healing and even cause ulcers.

I'm 4 weeks post op and I was a MAJOR Diet Coke addict presurgery but haven' even been tempted to take a sip of one since surgery -- just doesn't even sound good anymore.

I was told "no caffeine" which roughly translates to no caffeinated coffee. I drink one large cup of Decaf coffee each day now. I make my own "no sugar added" whipped cream and add a spoon to my coffee and it tastes quite good. I have also found the British teas by Harney and Sons to be quite good. I order these over the internet.

I do drink a cup of coffee every morning my dr said that it's fine as long as I'm drinking enough fluids, so I don't get dehydrated .

I can drink regular coffee, and could starting a few weeks post surgery. I drank Decaf for a few weeks because I was overly cautious, but started on the regular coffee by a 6 weeks post op. I do have milk or half and half and I have found a nice hot skim latte is a great afternoon pick me up and a decent source of Protein. I did take protonix for about a year and four months post surgery, but have never had an issue with coffee. In fact, the issue would be if I couldn't have it.

The no carbonation rule is ok with me....but no coffee would have been a disaster!!

I was told no coffee because it is acidic and can cause ulcers, i did however find caffeinated crystal lite and have been drinking that in the morning instead. doc said one caffeinated beverage a day will not dehydrate so long as im getting my 64 oz in.

I thought the coffee rule was just during post op recovery. Are we suppose to avoid it indefinitely?

My team said no caffeinated beverages for the first three months. The used to say never but caffeine has been proven to help w/constipation, which is a common problem for WLS patients. My chronic painful Constipation problem was eliminated in April when I switched to a high Protein coffee that has two espresso shots in it. Now both I and my bowels wake up and function better in the morning! Lol

I was told no caffeine or alcohol for the first 6 months. I live on herbal tea and Vitamin Water Zero, the squeezed flavor is amazing!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
