So me and my mom are not on the same page when it comes to me getting the sleeve (Not that I thought we would be) so we often argue about it and sometimes I wish I wouldn't have told her, But she's my mom and I thought she had a right to know. She always brings up stories about WLS she's seen on tv, or a friend of a friend and it going wrong or them dying, She also believes I'm getting this done for all the wrong reasons and that the only person it's benefiting is the surgeons pocket. Her thoughts have not swayed me either way, but I know she's super uneducated on WLS and I'm looking for some help to sooth her worried "Mom Mind". What Facts, Articles, Statistics or videos would you show a worried loved one who could use a little bit more education on the subject of WLS or Gastric Sleeve to calm them or at least show them the facts?

I don't really care either way if she's against me getting it or not, But I'd like her to know all the positive/right facts and information instead of what she hears on television and through the grapevine.

Any surgery has its risks so this isn't any different. I don't think 'reading' or 'watching' informational videos will help, but rather pose more questions. It might help if she goes with you to your surgeon's office so she can ask questions directly to your Dr., maybe even sit in on a seminar as well. She can go with a list of questions that could also be helpful to you as well. You never know.

Good luck, I'm sure it'll turn out well :)

Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately she lives 3hrs away and never visits (she hates the drive).

And I'm past the stage of Dr's visits and seminars, My surgery is scheduled for September 8th.

I had the same issue with my mom (she lives 8 hours away from me). I just told her I had researched the procedure & my surgeon and was very comfortable with my decision. She continued to be negative even after my surgery but once she saw how much I had lost at 6 months, how my health had improved and how happy I was--she said she wish she could have it!!! Some people just set their minds against it and you can't change them. If they are the people (like our moms) that really love us, they'll feel differently once they see how your life has changed for the better. I wish my mother could have been more supportive before and right after the surgery but she wasn't and I had other people (husband and sons) that did that for me.

good luck on your surgery---September 8th will be here soon!! Lisa

WebMD has some very useful and medically accurate information about all 3 surgeries. They have slide shows and have statistics that talk about the benefits and risks. I think there might be some animated slideshows in it, too.

My first onery thought was just take a little "vacation" to Tiajuana, and don't even mention surgery. My second more sane thought was tell her you'll think about it, and go ahead and have your surgery. Unless she lays down in front of your car, she can't really stop you. So here's to your health. Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
