Can't hold down solids, what do I do?

Recommended Posts

I called my surgeon and he is in surgery until Thursday. The only thing I can do is to go on liquids until then. Do you think he'll take out my entire fill? I'm at 3ccs in a 4.2cc band. I feel like crap. I have PB'd about 8 times already today. No more solids for me. Julie

Julie,

poor thing! I know you must be hurting (and probably hungry)... good idea to stay on liquids and maybe start on maalox to get the swelling down. When I had my first unfill I couldn't even swallow my spit and he didn't take the entire fill out. Just taking a little out sometimes helps immensely and you'll feel it immediately. It is probably best to only take the minimum (of course doc knows best) because you'll start back adding Fluid slowly so you don't want to go toooo far back if you can help it.

take care! mary

Hi Julie, I really feel for you.B) I had an unfill yesterday as I was not keeping solid food down, and I was getting extreme pain everytime I tried to eat. Sweet relief! I had 4mls in my band, and now I have 2mls. I don't know what that is in cc's.

Hope you feel better soon.

Susannah

Hey Julie, I'm going in for an unfill on Friday myself. Hang in there on liquids until you can see the doc.

Just an update. My doctor handling it fantastic. He said that sometimes the stomach lining can thicken and give you more restriction. That being said, he took out 1.5 and boy can I tell the difference. It is so nice to be able to drink liquid and not have it stick in the band. He wants me back in 2 weeks for a checkup. Julie

Glad you are better. Can you give a little more info on the stomach lining thickining thing. This is the first time I have heard that and may explain my situation. I have always heard that as you lose weight your stomach shrinks thereby making you need a tighter fill. However, it seems the opposite with me. I am 10 lbs to goal and at a lesser fill now with only 2.3 yet am tight as can be. Maybe my stomach thickened?

Hi Laura, I don't know too much about it other than what my doctor told me. He said the membrane can thicken around the band giving you more restriction. It had to be the case because I feel great now having had 1.5cc taken out. I would ask your doctor why you are so tight. Julie

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
