bulawookie 116 Posted July 8, 2014 Exercising is hard. I really have to make myself since my thighs rub together and it is hot and humid here in Austin. I started with just 15 minutes twice a day. Now I have a treadmill in the A/C in front of a TV and I watch my favorite programs. Sometimes I walk barefoot. I park my car farthest in the parking lot. I opt for the stairs often. It gets easier when some weight comes off. I try to call it movement instead of exercising because it sounds better. If you have a dog that helps. Just stare in to their eyes!! Remember progress not perfection. Oh yeah ..........and persistence, persistence, persistence. 2 NolansNana and Finally banded reacted to this

2muchfun 8,927 Posted July 8, 2014 The best exercise is the type that you enjoy. Hiking, tennis, biking, walking, racquetball, swimming, gardening, skiing, X-country skiing and basketball are all types of exercise that can change each time you participate. Where, gym memberships, treadmills and ellipticals are all great exercise, they can become tedious in a short period of time. Mixing it up with machine type exercising, strength training, yoga and your favorite fun exercise should offer the biggest bang for the buck. tmf

labwalker 1,177 Posted July 8, 2014 Walking is a great way to exercise; I call it the universal exercise for anyone... About ten years ago I was grossly overweight, and I took my old lab and started walking the street. Within four months we were hiking the trails through the woods behind my home. By the time winter came, we both had lost weight, and we were doing two hour walks over rough terrain. I was able to lose 70 lbs, just by walking alone. And my lab lost a few inches around her waist and managed to live to almost 15 years old, mostly due to her exercising with dad... gawd, I miss that old lab Unfortunately, over the colder months I managed to put most of the weight back on... if you don't exercise, you will gain pounds. Fast forward: I had the band surgery in 2012. Since then I've lost 60 pounds, but more importantly I kept it off. One secret was joining Planet Fitness (with my doctor's blessing!!!) I started of very slow, maybe doing a mile on the treadmill for thirty minutes everyday. After a year, I am doing up to four miles on the treadmill, everyday, and burning at least 700 calories a day, just by walking on the machine. I feel a lot better, and I know it helps keep the weight off and under control. Ask your doctor's office for some guidance... fresh out of surgery I'd expect they'd tell you to walk slowly on your street, and no to push it. Once you are healed, a good fitness center (not a body builder muscle gym!) might be a good investment. If the exercise doesn't lose a lot of weight for you, I will guarantee you will feel better for the energy expended! Good luck! BTW, my new lab enjoys quiet walks on the street... the wooded trails behind our home are grown over, and full of ticks. If you want to walk your neighborhood, a good dog is the best motivation that you could have! 1 2muchfun reacted to this
Cindi2014 57 Posted July 8, 2014 I started out walking just 10 minutes a day. 2 months post-op, I am walking for an hour, 2+ miles. I feel so much better and I'm really seeing a difference. I no longer get winded which is a blessing. Hoping to join a gym soon too. 2 labwalker and 2muchfun reacted to this
NolansNana 210 Posted July 8, 2014 I love riding a bike. I'm not sure how long I'll have to wait to anything but walk. How long did you wait? Going to ask my Dr soon. 1 2muchfun reacted to this

RSwann 13 Posted July 9, 2014 My personal trainer developed this plan for me. 15 minute warm up on the stationary bike, level of difficulty 6 (to get heart rate 120+) Then 3 arm machines (weights) Then 3 leg machines Also, two stomach/back machines and then a cool down on the stationary bike for 15 minutes. I think my workout would have been more aggressive if I wasn't in a wheelchair. He did a plan for my mother-in-law and she has to do time on the treadmill, the stair climber & the elliptical. Before my accident, when I could walk, the elliptical was my favorite machine. It was easy on my joints which helped a lot. Whatever you end up doing, just try to keep your heart rate above 120 bpm so you know that your exercise routine has a good cardiac component.
