Should i be drinking more of my protein drink?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm currently only having half a cup a day. I'm 2 months post op and eating 3 x 1/2 cup-ish each meal. No heavy carbs only veges.

At two months, the doctor wants me to have most of my Protein from food rather than shakes (I sometimes do a morning shake, because food doesn't always agree with me for breakfast). Are you meeting your protein goals via food? If not, then the shakes aren't a bad way to boost your numbers. If you are, then don't worry about the shakes (and if you're having a shake, it should replace a meal, not be in addition to a meal, according to my doctor. But your doctor may have different diet plans, so check with him if you're worried)

I find it hard to eat all my Protein needs with food because I don't wanna eat all the fat with it. I also feel like I'm not eating getting enough. Ugh. Got a dietitian appointment next week. She will sort me out. Thanks for your reply. :))))

There is No or very little fat in fish, chicken, lean beef, nonfat cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, etc. besides, our bodies need fat for proper cell development and Vitamin absorption. I've never limited my fat intake post op and eat "fatty" Proteins like nuts and cheese and avocados everyday. In fact, once I hit surgeon's goal, I added more fat into my diet (switched from skim to 2% milk, nonfat to 4% cottage cheese, etcetera.) and I still lost 10 pounds in the last 5 weeks. That being said, I eat 5-6 times a day, but have such good restriction I can't reach Protein goals without a shake, even 6 months postop. I have a 24-32oz smoothie with at least 30g protein everyday. Double bonus for protein and fluids. I'm not sure why some doctors don't want patients having Protein Drinks. whey isolate is the purest, most absorbable form of protein there is.

Are you tracking Protein and carbs? My NUT and doctor have a goal of 60 g of Protein a day for me. If I'm eating that much, I find it hard to get many carbs in at all (except from the beans).

Even before seeing the NUT, you might want to log your food for a couple of days so they can see what you are eating and help fine tune it.
