i was banded on 4/17/07, and have been trying to get my protien in everyday. whenever i take anything with whey in it, i get sick.. and it hurts! i was really worried because i had only managed maybe 70-80 grams in the past week since my banding. does anyone else have this problem?

whey wasnt working so i tried soy, and i havent had to much of an issue with it..

whats the difference between the two?

Edie,

How many Carnations do you use for one shake? The sf ones I bought only have like 7 or something. Just wondering.

As long as you're getting Protein in I don't think it matters whether it's whey or soy protein. Pretty soon you'll be on mushies so you'll have more options too. As far as not having a problem with whey until you were banded....sometimes that does happen. I used to be able to eat pork and I can no longer do that without getting sick no matter how well I chew it. Some things just don't agree anymore. Good luck!

If I were you I'd search around a bit on the forum. These topics have come up before. In this thread, for example, people talked about Protein shakes:

http://www.lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?=33663&highlight=carnation

I know that some people have said that the Carnation breakfasts are high on sugar, but I have not checked. Also, it seems to me that they would be likely to have whey Protein instead of soy, but again, I have not checked.

As for soy protein, I've heard some people say that plant-based Proteins like soy can be harder to digest, but I've seen other people say they like them a lot. As for me, I know I prefer the taste of soy protein over whey.

But again, I would search the forum with keywords like whey, soy, carnation, protein, etc. I think you'll find a lot of info.

I heard that Whey is more easily digestible so I think that's why most people use it over soy. But, as far as which one is "better" I'm not sure there's any difference. So, if soy works better for you then I'm sure you're OK. I use a combo of both. Personally, soy Protein seems to keep me satisfied longer than whey...go figure!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
