How Much Were You Able to Eat a Few Days Post-op?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was sleeved on Monday, June 30th. Upon arriving home on 7/1, I started the stage II pureed/soft mushy food diet. I am only able to eat 1 oz of pureed food where as another woman who had the same surgery on the same day and with the same surgeon can eat 3 oz. What the heck? That's a huge difference when talking ounces. I'm curious, how many ounces were you able to eat a few days post op?

it has a LOT to do with the inflammation and swelling present. and it can last for a couple of weeks. it also can be affected by whether you had any hiatal hernia repair, what size bougie, etc...i learned not to compare because at 12 days out i was drinking 32 oz of Protein Shake without any issues in under an hour. i quickly learned that although it's not completely the norm, it is norm for me.

There can be wide variations in how much we can tolerate early on, primarily due to the amount of inflammation in and around the stomach after surgery. When my wife when through this a few years ago, she could barely consume her nominal stomach size in liquids in one sitting, whereas I could put away a seemingly limitless amount of liquid - both quite normal according to the doc. Mushies are a bit more restricted than liquids, but much the same can happen. I generally limited myself to 2-3 oz of non-liquids early on as we don't always have all the feedback of being full in place yet.

Hi, @mi75 and @@rickm,

Thanks for your responses. It all makes sense and thanks for giving me something to consider.

BTW, no hernia just a persistent swollen tummy.

Me to and I'm still on liquid till Thursday I had my surgery on 7/3 I find myself still hungry after I drink my fluids. I'm dreaming about the puree stage. I'm not a big Water drinker so I've been drinking crystal light and Gatorade as well as my Protein Shakes, what have anyone did to get full of the liquid stage

There are so many variables with different ages, weights, body size, doctors, etc. that it can boggle the mind. If you focus on what your doctor tells you, and listen to your body (such as burps post op signal hello, I am full, lol), then magically we all end up at the same place = weight loss! My husband and I eat differently, different foods and meal times. I would say I eat more than him, but he has lost more weight. Great journey, and good luck everyone!

I didn't have pureed foods until 2 weeks post op. Then, I could eat 1/2 veggie sausage (or 1/2 oz) or 1 oz yogurt. It depended on the food density.

Hi Missviscious,

While on the liquid diet I was able to have SF popsicles, SF Jello, low carb yogurt and SF pudding and 1-8oz serving of fat free milk. Congratulations on your surgery and good luck.

You were able to eat mushy food your 2nd week? How did your tummy handle it?

Wow I posted something about this earlier...different diets, for different doctors...you were eating mushy food your 2nd week? What was your post op diet plan?

My doc's plan was somewhat similar to what the OP's sounds like - liquids, mushies, purees and soft Proteins as tolerated for the first month progressing to everything else as tolerated after that. I had things like scrambled eggs and yogurt (and pureed lettuce?!? ewww...) in addition to the normal broths and juices in the hospital.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
