Palatable. Protien shake

Recommended Posts

I'm having my gastric to bypass tomorrow. I was just reading my nutritionist notebooks and thinking about the Protein Shakes when I get home. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good one that is palatable and lots of Protein? I have never been big on meal supplement shakes like carnation instant Breakfast or slim fast hard, for me to drink. Would like some information thanks!

I use Jay Robb whey Protein Powder. It comes in vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and one other flavor. You can get at Whole Foods if you have one in your area, or I buy it from Amazon. You can also get it directly from the company.

I add to it Torani sugar free syrups to add to the flavor. They come in a multitude of flavors. I buy the big bottles directly from the company. They also sell smaller bottles at Walmart but in limited number of flavors.

I also use PB2 chocolate Peanut Butter powder or the peanut butter powder to add more Protein and taste.

Now these are suggestions but if I were you I would ask your nutritionist if they are okay to use in they early stages for when you come home.

Good luck tomorrow and the best to you.

I used the Premier Protein brand which I purchased at costco. Each shake has 160 calories and 30 grams of Protein. They are tolerable and come in a few different flavors.

I also use Premier Protein and they now sell it at SAMS. 2/day and you've met your goal. I had to add milk in the beginning, but now I can drink it no problem.

Good Luck tomorrow, mamie60! Sending Prayers!

I do the premier shakes as well. After a month I was starting to struggle to finish them. A friend who is also had gastric bypass suggested making a smoothie with it. Now I add one banana and ice and blend it with the shake and can tolerate it well again.

Another supporter for Premier Protein here.

Pre-surgery, I tried every option I could find that met the criteria for my program. Muscle Milk Light and Premier Protein were by far the best tasting (to me) but the Premier Protein seemed to keep me full longer, so I've stuck with it.

I constantly have a dozen or so in the home fridge and 2 or 3 here at the office. I drink one for breakfast about 99% of the time and depending on how days go I have another for lunch about 25% of the time.

While I was in the clear liquid stage, I forced myself to drink the Isopure drinks as they're not "shakes" but a clear Protein Drink. I can't stand them now as they're entirely too sweet, but many in my support group seem to like them.

Regardless of which way you go - I'd suggest purchasing in small quantities until you can try them personally. The regular chain grocery stores usually sell 4 packs of the ready-to-drink shakes, then if you find one that suits you Costco/Sams are options for keeping the cost down.

I wasn't allowed shakes until the 2nd week -- had to have clear Protein the first week. Isopure sucked... so did the Whey Protein Bullets. I could take some Isopure if I mixed it with flavored Vitamin Water Zero. I really struggled to get in any protein that first week until I could move to shakes. I did like the drinks they added to Crystal Light at the hospital -- liquid Prosource -- can be ordered off Amazon. Or, you might beg off at the hospital and get them to give you a couple of packets to bring home. I did! :)

Good luck!

I used skim milk, frozen banana, ice and PB2 in my Protein Shake along with the Protein. The PB2 has protein as does the milk! So it's almost 40g protein for 1 shake!!!

I like the Premier Protein shakes pretty but the PB2 and banana sounds great. Is that considered full liquid?

I drank Isopure the first week for Clear Liquids. After that week Isopure became so gross to me I gave away all my bottles of it. I started premier and muscle milk and did well with that for a month. Then I couldn't stomach them so I switched to nectar fuzzy naval and cherry and it was a lifesaver bc it wasn't a creamy kind of drink and I was needing that. So I agree with the idea of not buying a ton of one thing bc you will get tired of it. I never had much luck making smoothies or blending shakes bc the frothing was just gross to me. I hear a lot of people use the Unjury chicken Soup as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
