Hi. When I first decided to have WLS I was sure I wanted the sleeve, but I was never quite comfortable with that. After a lot of research and soul searching I decide on the RNY which I had 6/24/14. I have been obese since childhood and felt that the extra components the RNY offered would be better for me. Good luck on making your decision and with the surgery itself. Melissa

It's a decision best made by you and your doctor (who know your medical history). I decided on bypass because I wanted the dumping syndrome to help with my addiction to carbs and sugar but also because I had pretty bad reflux and the sleeve can aggravate that. I wasn't so concerned with the rerouting of the intestines like some people who choose the sleeve. I wanted the surgery that gave me the best chance of success and didn't want to start with a different surgery and end up going to bypass if I wasn't successful. I gave it my all the first time.

So far, it's going great!

Just read all you can on sites like this and WebMD and the mayo Clinic sites and you can make the best decision for you.

Best wishes!

Ginger

Good luck with your decision. I am going through the same soul searching journey. I was absolutely sure I wanted the sleeve when I first started really considering bariatric surgery. I met with my surgeon and he said I could choose either surgery and he would be fine with it. I am really now leaning to the bypass side of the equation. Bypass has been around for a long time and is a proven method with known long term effects. The sleeve is too new for me to truly be comfortable with it. I still go back and forth and it will be a while before I am finally able to decide. Good luck and know you aren't alone.

I chose the sleeve because I did not want weight loss that was too drastic or sudden, for me. I was 230# I've lost 20lbs since I had my sleeve done on 6/23/14 and my goal is 150lbs. Losing 80lbs is a good bit but I suffer from pressure inside my skull and so I am looking for relief from my symptoms more than a dramatic transformation.

I also was leaning towards sleeve when I first started out but after doing a lot of research, talking with my pcp and my surgeon I decided to also go bypass (RNY). I had type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure with occasional acid reflux. As of today, just over 4 months out I'm no longer taking any medicine for any of my co-morbitities. I'm down just over 60 lbs, with tons of energy. I've not had dumping, if I eat what I'm supposed to I never should. I take 2 multi Vitamins in the morning and another 2 at night along with 1 Vitamin D. So far this has been the best decision I've ever made for me. Please research diligently before deciding. Only you, your primary and your surgeon can know what is best for you. Best of luck, it's a long process but it has very rewarding results.

I hear ya! When I first started my journey, I was determined to get the sleeve. I thought it was less risky and invasive. Then, after I had my first seminar, I changed my mind. I had a difficult time thinking about losing 85% of my stomach, plus I have acid reflux, so this is a good way to get by without 1 more med. I also found out, that the RNY has greater potential that I will be able to come off my diabetic meds. I worry more about the diet after the surgery than I do the surgery itself. I hope to use this site to help with Protein shake ideas, then with the transition to regular food. I agree that the "dumping" is a good thing in disguise. It will keep me from those nasty carbs/sweets that I sooo love!! Keep in mind that you are doing this for a healthier way of life. I don't know about you, but I am one excited lady. Good luck with your decision!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
