Surgery Scar - What do you tell people?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! So I had surgery almost a year ago this month. I have yet to get in a swimsuit and hang out with people. My fear is I have not told anyone about my surgery beside my family and my best friend. Obviously I know have a scar on my stomach from surgery...If you haven't told anyone about your surgery, does anyone have any suggestions for me to tell people when they ask me what the scar is from? I haven't had any additional big surgery that I could say that is what it is from.

I just am nervous about the questions that will get asked when we go to the pool in a couple of weeks.

Thanks in advance!!

I am assuming you would prefer to keep your surgery private. Answers could be:

1. None of your business

2. If I told you I would have to kill you.

3. Battle scars.

4. Been practicing fencing.

5. Under cover spy

I mean really, you are not obligated to answer that. If you feel the need to say something then give a smile, use one of my suggestions and move on.

Good luck and congrats that you can wear a bikini!

Colleen

I am almost 4 years out, and you cannot find any scars....although my port sticks out like a scene out of "Alien"

I'd rather have scars than a golf ball size lump sticking out under my skin....

"Knife fight

You should see the other guy

Isn't it a great day for a swim?"

People that remark on one's appearance (also known as asking a rude question) don't deserve a real answer.

If you don't want questions, wear a one piece.

If you want to wear a two-piece and someone asks, tell them you had your gallbladder taken out.

I vote for the one piece or tankini, or dermal blend makes a great Water resistant product, followed up with setting powder ... Enjoy your day regardless, have fun with your friends! :-)

say "female issues" usually shuts people down fairly quickly

my lap band scar is similar to my gall bladder (surgery) scar (if that helps>?)

Like others have said, you don't owe anyone an answer to those kinds of questions. I also can't imagine that people would even ask about it!

My philosophy is, if they're close enough to see my scar, they need to back up a few feet anyway. Most people are also too busy with themselves to notice small things like that.

I like some of the answers, above. If someone is rude enough to ask questions about something that is none of their damned business, slay 'em with snark.

You owe no one any explanation. Your body, your business. If you want to share, do so if not, don't. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
