Protein Supplements, what's good, whats bad?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm scheduled for my sleeve procedure on July 23rd. I'm trying to have enough supplies stocked up for after but I'm not sure what to buy. The Protein Shakes are really expensive so I'm afraid to drop $40 on one and find out that it tastes awful. I was also curious if anyone tried adding unflavored or vanilla flavored powder to their yogurt? Is that allowed? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Why not just get some whey powder from Walmart or GNC or Vitamin Shoppe. I love making my own shakes. One scoop has about 20 grams of Protein and 100 calories. Add it to yogurt, milk or just about anything. I also like the Premier brand shakes from costco, but per gram of protein they cost about triple. You may like the Isopure or other drinks made from protein "isolates". Body builders prefer these but they no advantage to us and they are much more expensive and don't taste as good. Good luck. There are plenty of choices.

As long as it doesn't have suger, it doesn't matter what brand right? Everything getting to this point has been so complicated, I keep thinking I must be missing something. hahahaha

I love Jay Robb chocolate whey powder. I mix it with a little soy milk here, a little cocoa powder there, a dollop of natural Peanut Butter, some ice cubes with a few splashes of stevia and blend away. At times I will put a few slices of banana in it too.

Ummmm, so good!

Has anyone added Protein to your crystal light? I'm worried about staying hydrated.

rockin refuel Protein chocolate. It's in Dairy case near milk. The chocolate is 30g Protein and 9g net carbs. They other flavors have a TON of sugar and only 20g.

The powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury.com website has unflavored that can be mixed in anything except plain Water. My friend had the strawberry & really likes it. 20g a scoop.

KEEP IN MIND don't mix Protein Powder in any food hotter than 150°. The protein breaks down, gets clumpy and dietician says u lose grams of protein as a result.

The one thing different I would have done is order the Unjury beforehand. Im waiting for my order (few days). I'm 10 days post op and it's so hard to get the 800 calorie. & 75g protein minimum. The rockin refuels help but I get so bloated and feel like I'm force feeding the liquid

Go to Nashanutrition.com they have samples of almost every Protein Shake & flavor available! Honestly it was the best thing I ever did. Flavors I thought I'd love were eh and others I ordered for the hey of it I loved! Well worth trying before buying a huge one!

Yeah, the conventional wisdom is that you probably shouldn't go too crazy stocking up, as there might be flavors you like now but can't stand later, or vice versa. Most of the web sites have options where you can buy samples; I think you can do this at GNC and to a lesser extent Whole Foods too.

I add a tablespoon of Unjury unflavored Protein Powder to all soft foods (yogurt, cottage cheese, refried Beans, etc) to bump my Protein. Any more than a TBS affects the taste and texture, though.

Congratulations! I like you wanted to have the pantry "stocked" in anticipation for the recovery period. Truth is, you are not "down" that long and you can go out and shop for these items within a few days of your surgery. For a dense shake, i like the premier Protein chocolate shake. You can find them at food LIon or wholesale clubs like Bj's. My go to is the unjury unflavored Protein. I mix it with flavor packets from the grocery store. You can change up the flavors much easier than buying a whole "tub" of one flavor. I use walmarts brand of Blueberry acai drink mix. I also use the TRUE orange mango mix that i get at Harris Teeter grocery store. I tried the Isopure from GNC and hated it. Do look for sample packets you can purchase if you want to go that route.

You are on your way to a healthier you!

I found the Syntrax Nectur very good. You can get individual serving packages at The Vitamin Shoppe or online. I love the vanilla Torte. You can try different flavors without getting stuck with a tub you don't like. Also unjury has a pretty good chicken broth. I use that when my stomach feels icky or I need more Protein for the day. Good luck with your surgery & your sleeve journey.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
