Hello all,

I had VSG on May 20 and am now nearly 7 weeks post-op.

I have been somewhat unsuccessful with traveling after since my surgery. At just under 1 month post-op, I ended up pretty ill, nauseous and vomiting after a short weekend trip. I couldn't eat much and had a very hard time getting in Protein and fluids. Before surgery, I found some some pre-packaged shakes I liked, but I found out that weekend that I cannot tolerate any pre-packaged shakes after surgery. I actually cancelled a business trip out of state right after that because I had gotten so sick and felt like I just couldn't do it.

Last week, I had an overnight trip and was more successful bc I was in a hotel room with a kitchenette. I took my blender and made my morning shake, and I also made a scrambled egg/turkey sausage skillet for my supper. I have another trip coming up (part business and part family reunion) and I am a bit anxious about it since I got so sick on that first one. I realize that I am further out, but I really don't function well the rest of the day if I don't get my Protein Shake in the morning because it gives me a start on my fluids and a big Protein boost. I use the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury protein powders and think they are great. So, I have a powder I like and just need help with making it work while traveling. I am also struggling to find a Protein Bar that I like post-op that isn't over the top in calories and carbs. Again, I did well with the Premier Protein before surgery but can't stand them post-op.

I bought a set of the shake mixing/blender bottles with a wire mixing ball in each of them at Sam's Club, but I haven't tried them yet. Do these work? Do they mix in the Protein Powder well? I hate to sound so picky, but I don't do well with weird textures and I need my shakes well-blended. Nausea is a big problem for me post-op (even 7 weeks out) that can get out of control if I'm not careful, and weird textures (like gloppy powder) can send me over the edge.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Peace

I love my Blender Bottle and use it every day. I mix my chocolate Unjury powder with Atkins shake, almond milk, a little ice and either sugar free mocha or hazlenut Syrup. I love my morning Protein Shake and not only do I get 36 grams of Protein but plenty of liquid to start my day. I'm going to be traveling too, in August, and I've decided to pack my atkins shakes and a supply of Unjury Protein Powder and my blender bottle. I'll have a fridge and will just mix my shakes in the room. The Atkins shakes don't have to be refridgerated and when they're gone, I'll have more room for souveniers! I'll pack some little Peanut Butter packets, they sell them at Whole Foods, cheese sticks, and maybe almonds as Snacks for the trip. I think I'll be ok, but I am a bit worried about about the trip too. So much unknown with travel.

Maybe pack some Protein Bars, turkey Jerky bites, and if you have a cooler tote put some cheese Snacks or the Oscar myer Protein packs with almonds, meat, and cheese .

Can't you purchase what you need where you are traveling? I travel quite a bit for business but currently on medical. I traveled during pre op diet and:

Packed my powdered Protein powder in a Blender Bottle

Purchased 8 ounce almond milk at a local grocery store and mixed it up

Found a Vitamin shoppe and a GNC local to my trip - purchased Isopure there. They also have all your shakes

One of my staff has had this surgery and I had her traveling with me 3 months post. She shipped herself everything to the hotel that she needed in advance.

Also if you stay at a residence inn/springhill or hilton garden in. They tend to have kitchenettes in their suites you can prepare your own Breakfast

hrlaurie,

Thanks for the info about your positive experience with the blender bottle and for the other suggestions. I will try it this week so I know what I'm getting into before I head out of town for 10 days. I haven't tried the Atkins shakes. I may check those out.

Thanks

Jersrose,

On my short, overnight trip (second trip) I was at a Residence Inn and had my blender, a fridge and a range to cook eggs. I was more in control of the hotel selection then and was by myself instead of with kids. Both of those contributed to a better experience on that trip. On the first trip, I was at a convention hotel for an event that two of my kids were invovled with. I thought the hotel room would have a fridge, but it didn't. That really messed with what I had planned.

On this next trip, I will be staying at a conference hotel that does not list a fridge as standard in the room. However, I am going to call them tomorrow and see if they have one I can use (for a fee, I'm sure) in my room. I will be flying, so I am somewhat limited in what I can take with me, but we are also renting a car, so I plan to stop at a grocery store on the way to the hotel to get anything I need. The first trip was a significant learning experience for me and I paid the price for assuming things would be conducive to my post-op needs. I know better now.

Thanks

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
