I have been on a pre op diet for three weeks now. Two weeks of 2 shakes and one meal and one week of three shakes and veggies. So I am in the home stretch, one week to go, im taking in 600 calories or less a day. (Cant choke down the shakes anymore, and never want to see another leaf of lettuce as long as I live.) Now im GAINING weight. WHAT???. Im starving, I cant sleep im so hungry. I have gained two pounds of the 15 I had lost. I now need to loose six pounds in six days. Aside from laxatives, does anyone have any suggestions? I am so frustrated. I just want to give up. I know my metabolism is f***** but this is ridiculous.

++I am drinking one black coffee every morning, so that should be acting as a diuretic right?

That's totally crazy! I was somewhat in the same boat, still am. I believe that at 600 calories a day, our bodies go into starvation mode, and hold on to the fat :(

I'm post op one month, and taking in 600/800 cals a day, and was up a half pound today, I feel your pain. But inevitably it will come off.

Actually there isn't a scientific basis for the starvation mode theory. Its just one of the things I read not that long ago and pointed out on another thread.

What type of mix in terms of Protein, fat, and carbs, are you drinking?

My shakes have to follow a certain nutritional guideline, so

Alternative Protein shakes should meet the following criteria per serving:
Minimum of 20 grams of Protein per serving
Minimum of 3 grams of Fiber
No more than 2 grams of sugar
No more than 8 grams of carbs
No more than 3 grams of fat
Not over 200 calories per serving
Add a probiotic
whey protein is preferable
I am taking about one and a half of these a day.

Hmmmmm

that is a great list. Different from the ones I've seen here but still outstanding. Could you be burning lean muscle and not fat?

That is not a REAL weight gain. To gain two pounds, you would have had to consume 7000 calories more than you burned. That two pounds is a temporary fluctuation in your weight due to Water retention or not having had bowel elimination. Thus, the reason many of us do not weigh daily. Those temporary gains are just that...... temporary. Just keep to your plan, and you will succeed.

I agree... Water retention... you do not have the calorie intake to gain. It doesn't take much water to add a few pounds.

Towards the end of my pre-op diet I was kind of in the same boat. I wasn't gaining, but I didn't lose. I didn't lose very much on my pre-op diet at all, in fact, and I wasn't even allowed to eat any food, just Protein Shakes. Like others mentioned it is probably just a mix of Water retention and bloating from the diet adjustment. What actually helped me was increasing my water intake and going for long walks. The water helps flush your system out and the walking aides in getting your insides moving better so the bloating goes down. Best of luck to you! Hang in there :)

Agree with Water retention. It can fluctuate by several pounds. Hang in there!

Thanks everyone, I was all annoyed and ready to go to New york fries for dinner, cause, you know its not working so may as well give up right?

And then I get to read all of your encouragement and I remember to keep the course and trust in my physician's plan. :)

Im not sure. I haven't had ketone bodies in my urine in a few days, so it is possible. This list came from my nutritionist. My doctor sells his own brand, but this list is great for people like me who like variety.

Without the variety I may have quit the shakes two weeks ago!

I would probably vote for the burning of muscle. That and possibly Water gain. Can the nut help you any?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
