Dear God,

Music is my livelihood. How long until my abdominal muscles return to its strengths?

Sincerely,

I don't know. it takes time to recover and build up again. Your going to get it all back. Have patients little one...

I was in a coma for 19 days as a complication of this surgery and I can no longer sing at all. no longer can reach the high notes due to a trach. Be glad you will get there and very soon..

I did not make my living singing but it meant the world to me to be able to sing.... :(

I'm also a musician (singer/vocal coach) and worried about the same thing. Keep doing deep breathing on a regular basis and even vocal exercises for breath (ie. lip buzz) - that's our exercise too! I don't know how far you are out but I'm six weeks and find it much easier to sing now. Remember it will take some time to build back the stamina but it will happen! For me I think it was a little more paranoia that I wasn't going to sound the same after dropping some weight. Welcome to our "new normal" !

I'm nine days out. My paranoia is intense, as some people posted about not having the same timbre and projection post-op. But I believe in the slow buildup. This morning, I spoke with a friend on the phone and got so winded after a few minutes, that I actually shut up and listened - a new milestone, LOL!

9 days out.....yep, I was tired after just a little conversation too! Give yourself time! Your body just went through Major surgery and you need to rest and DRINK. Hydrate those chords for sure! :-) I haven't noticed much change in my singing other than I can actually take quicker breathes and fill all the way up and don't feel so exhausted after singing a song lol! More stamina and more room for breath...yeah!!!!

Ahhh, I yearn for that. I'm motivated to keep hoping.

If you're feeling breathless even when talking, I'd suggest calling the doctor. Five days after my surgery, I was having trouble getting enough breath to finish sentences. I didn't feel pain or anything, just didn't seem to be able to get enough air in. He sent me to the ER and turns out I had pneumonia (no fever or other symptoms). Shortness of breath can also be a sign of a pulmonary embolism, so it's worth mentioning to your doctor.

I sing for my church worship team and it took me 2 weeks after the pneumonia to feel like I had any lung capacity again but now I feel great 4 weeks out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
