Raging-high BP after surgery

Recommended Posts

6 days post-op, and my BP is climbing every day. yesterday it was 176/86.

This morning, I feel like I will pass out. I don't understand this. Since starting my BP meds in November, my BP as stabilized in time for surgery. The minute I was done with the surgery, my body has exploded. I don't know what this means. The doctor's office is saying that it is my pain levels, because I am not taking anything for it. Honestly, I don't think I am feeling much pain! I feel uncomfortable, and that is normal.

I thought the weight loss was going to solve this. I really don't know how to proceed.

It may be that you have a very high pain tolerance, but your body will still feel the effects of that pain. If you're not in much pain, try taking some liquid Tylenol. It might help relax your body enough to lower your blood pressure.

I had virtually no pain and never even opened my pain meds, but at any sign of even the slightest discomfort I took liquid tylenol (for the first couple days anyway). You will heal better and faster when you have minimal pain/stress.

I figured I'd try Tylenol yesterday... and landed in the ER. I don't know what's going on.

Really? Did you let your surgeons office know? I have no idea what would cause that. Let us know how it goes.

My BP went up in the hospital after surgery (to the same level as you). They gave me nitro paste on a patch, then something in my IV and it got under control by the second day (though the nitro gave me a headache). After each if my c-sections, my BP popped up to the same level too and I had to go in labetalol for a couple months. Maybe our bodies don't like being cut open. But seriously get some meds at the hospital or doc's to deal with it right away... The longer it is high, the more you'll stress, which doesn't help...! ;-)

Wow, I can't believe there's another human like me. I've had several surgeries and births, and my BP always freaked out. I did ask the surgeon yesterday about increasing the BP meds, and after one week of hell, I finally got a straight answer: "We do not manage blood pressure, speak to your Primary Care". Well duh! No wonder they haven't been addressing it. I was calling the wrong place. I will make an appointment to speak with the PCP. I cannot drive yet to get there (I keep fading in and out and am lightheaded from the BP). Thank you, @@TraciHade so much!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
