3 days post-op - can only drink warm liquids

Recommended Posts

June 30th was my day and it went great. I had no nausea and very little gas pain.

I only have 2 small issues so far and I am wondering if the are common:

1. If I sip anything cold or room temp it feels like a stabbing pain in my stomach. Warm liquids do not hurt.

2. Everytime I take a sip I feel/hear this sizzling noise and I burp involuntarily. What is that all about?

I have only had Water, Gatorade, tea, and broth so far.

Congratulations!

Sounds like you're doing really well

I've read many folks on the site feel better with warm liquids.

I am the opposite. The cold makes me feel way better than the hot/warm liquids.

Livingmore-I have the same thing. Every time I sip water it just sits at the bottom of my esophagus and it makes me burp. I'm really sore today. I know it will get better, but I'm already tired of sitting around and hurting. Took the dog for a walk this morning. How long foes it take the surgery soreness to heal ( not the incisions, but the stomach.

I haven't had any sensitivity to anything hot or cold but I DEFINITELY get all the noises. As soon as I swallow anything the tummy starts churning and squirting and making noises... I'm pretty sure that's completely normal.

Make sure you're taking small sips and drink what feels best. It gets better!

I was the same way! 12 days out and I have to start my morning with warm Water and then it has to be room temperature throughout the day. Cold Water makes me nauseous. The weird thing is I can drink a shake with ice in it and it doesnt bother me at all. Also i tolerate gatorade better than water so I have been mixing it half and half!

My dr said cold things will create little spasms in the stomach so I try to stick to warm things even with sf pops I let them melt completely in my mouth where it become warm before I swallow lol ..

It sure is true what everyone says about your taste changing after surgery. My favorites, popsicles are way too sweet and tart and broth is too salty. Thank goodness for Sonic ice! I'm looking forward to Protein Shakes tomorrow ( never thought I'd hear myself say that)

Drinking is definitely a weird experience- best for me to go slow and avoid super cold drinks. Having my first post-op Protein Shake now- so far the sensation is quite similar to the Clear Liquids.< /p>

My day was June 30 as well. Had the same experience when sipping my liquids. By yesterday evening the gurgling/burping decreased significantly. Now I find I sip too quickly. Haven't had any issues but don't want to cause any either.

I am just about 12 weeks out and I had an issue with cold or room temperature Water. The plain water made my stomach queasy. I tried different brands and different temperature but it was all the same. So I tried several different water flavors until I found something that made water easier.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
