Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

do you need seperate surgery; 1st band removed and later the sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering how many people had the band removed first to be followed up lasted by the sleeve? I just spoke to Dr Alveres office and they now do it in tow procedures. That adds to the cost, recovery time, time off work, travel expense etc BUT if it is a good thing to do then I need to consider it.

I have had my band for over 10 years now so if anyone is going to have scar tissue I am guessing it will be me.

What happens with other surgeons, if they open you up and see a lot of scar tissue do they just move forward or do they stop? I m looking for someone with a lot of revision experience. I was planning to go to Dr Aceves but that is not possible. Has anyone go to any of the docsthat Dr. Aceves worked with? I would love to get feedback on anyone who has had a good or bad revision experience. Do they actually open you up and then say nope its not going to work!

I had the band 10 years and the surgeon gave me a choice. They believed at the time that separate surgeries reduced some of the complication risk but could not show me a published study so I felt it was more anecdotal back in 2011 when I was revised. Band removal included scrapping away scar tissue.

When the surgeon did my sleeve he told me he was able to do a good standard sleeve. ..which isn't always the case with revisions. I have been very successful post revision and I suppose the surgical part (size and shape of sleeve) is a big part of that.

I have not checked recently if there are studies on this. Have you gone to medline?

I had my band removed in May. I am having my sleeve done on August 28th. Mr. Dr. said that he likes to give your stomach time to heal in between. I actually was scheduled for July 9th and felt that was too quick. And I wanted to enjoy the summer. I am not sure about the costs. My insurance company is paying for everything. They also paid for my lapband surgery 3 years ago. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info. I am guessing that both of you had it done close to home. I will need to take several days off to go to Mexico twice and also am paying for it myself. Convenince and cost are issues but of course health needs to be high on my list as well. I am wondering what percentage of folks have it done in two steps and so will keep looking for more info. I was not aware of the med site so will look into that. thank you.

I had the Band to Sleeve done in the same surgery. I found there was some more pain than normal and developed a Fluid pocket that drained from my lowest incision for 6 weeks. My surgeon told me that my port was deep in the muscle and had to be dug out which caused alot of damage. everything seems to be ok now. im a liitle over 6 weeks post op.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
