New to group 1 week post - op

Recommended Posts

Hello all. I had my RNY on 6/24 and am experiencing some of the same issues. I too have severe bruising on my lower abdomen which my doc assured me was normal. I also had retained so much Fluid I gained 22 pounds in the hospital. Thankfully I have lost 24 pounds in 4 days. I am finding it impossible to both drink 64 oz of Fluid and get 60 grams of Protein. The Protein Drink fill me up so much I cannot take anything else for fear of it coming back up. My biggest issue is that I have no soreness when I am up and about but I cannot lay in my bed,I have been sleeping in a recliner since I got home from the hospital. I hope we can keep in touch and share stories through this life changing journey.

Good to hear bruising is normal - I think it improved the past two days. I knew this wasn't going to be easy- just nervous about having post- op issues even though doing best I can to do things right!!

It's normal to be nervous about things you've never experienced before. Just keep following your doctor's instructions and you'll be fine. You are on your way to better health! :-)

Meeting protein and fluid goals are something to strive for but in the first weeks following surgery many don't come close. I know I didn't. My doc said to concentrate on fluids first and work on the protein. Fluids are very important to avoid ending up back in the hospital due to dehydration. I think I was probably somewhere nearer 8-10 weeks before I finally topped 60gr of protein for the very first time. It gets easier. Whenever you eat try to make it count. We eat far too little to be filling up on empty calories!

I'm really supposed to be on full liquids stage weeks 2-3, I find it so strange how different each persons diet can be even though we're only on second post-op week. I couldn't handle just liquids anymore so I tried the applesauce & cottage cheese & Greek yogurt & have handled all 3 well. I can't do Soups or juices because of my acid levels & trying to heal an ulcer.

I need to buy unflavored protein- can you find it at GNC or Vitamin Shop would rather go pick it up then have to order it & wait?

Thanks everyone - it's been so helpful reading all the comments from others!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
